Club Sadowsky!!!

The preamp contributes to that sound, if that is what a person desires (and obviously many do), but Sadowsky pickups are part of that sound, as well as wood selection and other parts of the bass.

You asked, "Why even buy a Sadowsky if you plan on running it passive?".
A lot of people probably wouldn't, but some people (maybe only a few) are "passive purists", so to speak, yet still love the other aspects of Sadowsky basses.

I would prefer an active/passive switch myself, and the VTC would be a definite requirement.

That's not what I meant to imply. I agree with Addison. While I do consider the preamp to be an important component of the Sadowsky magic, it's not the whole shootin' match by a LONG shot. There are a LOT of things Roger has done with his design and build process that define why people are so content paying that kinda' money for his take on the fender theme.

I think his pickups are also a custom wind from each vendor he's worked with.

Yep, you have to get one in your hands to see. But there are def others who have played without the pre. I talked to Sven Pipien of the Black Crowes, who often plays his live with the pre switched off.

The active/passive feature is definitely worth it. For me it's a peace of mind feature. I had a VTC installed on my old Metro Modern but never used it much.

I usually run in passive mode when one of my NYC P5s is strung with flats.

Also, not all Fender clones are created equal -- not even boutiques. My first boutique FSO (around 2002) was a Lull: impressive, high quality bass, and I'm sure Lull is Just Right for some, but I got a Sadowsky in 2005 and realized that Sadowsky is Just Right for me.

I've had Lull's before, and also got to know Mike before he passed. Great instruments and a great guy.

I wish Sadowsky endorsers got a but more notoriety. Roger has been at it for 40+ years, one of the best all-time bass builders, and it's crazy how many people have never heard of his brand. But maybe that's a good thing... we don't need NYCs any more pricey than they already are! lol...

That's a nice bass, but at that price Spaceman must be from a different planet. You can get a brand new one for *deleted*. Edit: OK, it's in CAD. It would be $3470 in USD. That's still roughly equal to a new German one. I know the MIJ Metros are sought after, but that's still above Reverb pricing (which is already high).
