Club Sadowsky!!!

If you notice in this picture, the pole pieces on the P pickup are not diagonal like the current models. That's because Roger switched to a custom Nordstrand set from the set he was using previously (which is what mine originally shipped with). The Metro PJ5 I played at NAMM had the same new Nordstrand pickup set in it and I REALLY dug it. Not that I dislike what's in it, because those are really nice too. I just think the new set is a significant enough improvement it's worth the money. We'll see tho. :)

Vic

Let me know what you think of the updated pickup. My PJ5 has the older pickup in it. I like it a lot but if the new one is a noticeable improvement I'll certainly give it a shot.

Thanks,
JC

"Improvement" of course is dependent on what you're after. In my case, what I'm hoping for, is a bit more high end presence. This bass has such a huge big warm sound that I think I'd like it with a bit more going on up high. Also, I'm doing both, not just the P. It's just that the P is the only one that's visibly different on the Sadowsky site.

Nope. In fact, it's not even a Sadowsky, which is why I didn't mention it here, but I think Mike knows now which bass I'm talking about. :)

THAT RED BASS??!?!?!?

Oh Vic......VIC!!!!!!

Killin' me bro.
I'm broke as hell and you're thinking of selling one of the baddest basses I think I ever played!!!

Hey guys, I wasn't sure whether to post my question in Setup and Repair, Pickup and Electronics or here, but I figured I might get more response here.

I have a HPJ that I'm having a minor problem with. It seem that I get a lot of fret clank with this bass, mainly on the E string, and much more so than my other basses. If I turn off the active circuit it sounds much better and the tone is better. I've tried raising the action but it starts getting too high for me. Could it be the strings? I use DR Hi-Beams 45-100 gauge on this bass. They've always worked for my basses in the past. Just looking for suggestions. :)

If it's just the nature of the tone, I'd suggest messing around with the VTC and treble controls to alter the nature of the high end. If it's that you're simply getting too much fret interaction at your preferred action height, and it's not a fret level issue (which I would doubt it is), then I'd suggest a stiffer string. The HB's have a round core. Great for longevity and certain tonal character, but also adds slinkiness, so you get more fret interaction. Maybe try som LoRiders. They come in both Nickel and SS, so you have your choice there as well, which might be cool. Otherwise, while I do prefer DR's on my Sadowsky J/PJ basses, their strings are very nice, and are hex core, so they are typically a bit stiffer than DR HB's.

FWIW, anyway. :)

That's a thought. I've used Lo-Riders in the past but preferred the tone of the Hi-Beams. I thought maybe at first that it was the flat radius of the neck, but my MTD also has a really flat radius and I don't have that problem. I have tried messing with the tone quite a bit and I do like quite a bit of high end, so I hate to have to turn the tone down most of the way to be able to avoid the clank.

Ok, but I'm still unclear as to what your difficulty is with.

Is it the tone of the fret interaction, or the amount of fret interaction? In other words, is it tonal or mechanical?

Is it that you get just as much fret interaction on other basses, but due to the tone of the bass, it's fine, in which case you find yourself trying to take the frets completely out of the picture, or, is it literally that you just seem to get a lot more fret involvement on this bass for some reason?

I think it's mechanical. I get a lot more fret interaction on this bass than I have on any other bass I've had. And I don't particularly think it's a technique issue because of the above reason though. If it's the strings, it's the first time I've run into this problem with HI-Beams, but it could be that this bass needs something different.

I was just saying that I didn't care for the tone of the Lo-Riders, sorry if that was confusing.

Cool. That makes sense, and yeah, since your technique doesn't really change from bass to bass, I'm guessing it's just something about the bass. Maybe it does need a fret level?

Nope, not confusing. While I do like the LoRiders, I also do like the HB's more, so I wasn't responding to that.

Well, good luck widditt, hope you can get it dialed in. :)

It's just one of those annoying things on an otherwise great bass. I may have to get the frets checked out if a string change doesn't fix it.

Oh and, I will give the nickel strings a try too Bikeplate. Thanks.

Time for me to take one for the team...

Of course all I can hear in these tracks are my mistakes, but in the spirit of nenor posting that really cool video of himself playing, maybe some folks here might like these trax. They're just quick/dirty website demo trax for the dance band I'm in, but they were all recorded with my plain jane ash/maple Sadowsky J5. Just slightly favoring the bridge on the pan, dialed the VTC back to about 1/2-3/4 on, to sweeten it up a bit. Man I love the way that bass sits in a mix.

Be kind, I bruise easily... :)

Vic, Not bad, but I can't understand how you can post this clips with such an ugly mistake at 2:34 on the 3rd track. :eyebrow:

you guys are so humble that it stinks
:D:D:D

Ok, you got me. :) 2:34 on a 1:11 track... I almost went back and listened to it to see what you were talking about, and then I realized... duuuhhhhh... :)

Here's a couple of new pics of my P5 and M5-24. These were taken by Nino at Sunday's New England GTG. It was another kick@** event hosted by AJBrown and his wife Kathy. Michael Manring and Mike Dimin were there too. Need I say more?

Nice! Wow, Manring. That must have been something.

That is a beautiful Modern. I think if I had done a maple board and Norstrand pickups, I might actually still own mine. That's a beautiful spec tonewise and aesthetically!

K

Thanks, Ken!

Not to derail, but I missed Manring's performance. I arrived just after he finished playing. :atoz: I did get to meet him, though-what a nice guy!

I hear that most of the TBers that heard him play have decided to give up playing bass, so there should be some good deals in the classifieds soon! :D

Kevin, I second Ken's comments and I love the matching headstock P Body P/J.

A question for everyone:

Is it just me or do P bodies look more symmetrical on P/J's then J bodies?

I don't know why I've always preferred the P body on that pickup configuration cosmetically. Maybe it just looks more logical like I could see a guy sticking a J pickup in a P body more then I could see a guy ripping a J pickup out of a J bass to stick a P in. Just thinking out loud, and that's about is deep as it gets.:D
