Well, ok then.
It was the same club I took the RV5 out to for the first time last week.

It worked out about as I expected. The Mesa/2x12+2x6 provided a more vintage top end.
I ran the RV5 much as I did the other jobs I've used it on so far: bass+ a tad, treble + a tad; vintage tone dialed back a tad. Add a little more bass for the bridge pickup. Man, that bridge pickup barks!

I'm really liking how playing with a lighter touch on this bass does nothing to diminish how the notes jump out! It's very effortless like that.

I have a d-tuner on my 4. It's a nice addition for sure. Sometimes, I switch in the middle of a song/medley if I need a low Eb or a low D. You can tune it to Eb or Db, maybe even C if you want, but be sure to use strings with a heavier gauge then. I'm using 40-60-80-100 and when detuned, the E/D-string tends to be rather floppy and you can feel and hear the difference between a 5-string and a detuned 4, at least with lighter gauge strings.
If you like the neck and general feel of a four and if you need some occasional drop-tunings, then this thing is it!

I also have a 5 on order, and I asked Kevin about adding a detuner to do drop A. He told me it was possible, but I would need a very heavy gauge (he thought heavier than what they have, which is 130) and since I prefer a lighter gauge, I didn't have them to install one on my fiver.

I never used one of these as I have been playing 5 strings for many years. Decided to order a 4 string for a few different reasons.

I have had Hipshot D-tuners installed on several of my 4-string basses in the past, and I really like them. I can cover about 85% of the tunes I need to with a 4-string and a drop D. Of course, you could set it even lower (Will Lee drops his down to a C).

Recently, I have had the opportunity to review a Will Lee Signature Model for BGM, and in the specific case of a Hipshot D-tuner on a 4-string Sadowsky, this too works very, very well.

YMMV, of course.

But haven't mentioned anything about if you were able to get a decent vintage tone or how it cut in the mix.

That combo really helps take the uber modern top edn I was getting from the Mesa M6/UL410 rig and turn it into a much more vintage top end. Way less sheen/top end fret noise kinda thing>into a much more tubey non horn grind kinda thing.

Jeff,

Call Kevin and have them put it on! Beats having to do it yourself. Every 4 string I ever owned had one on it. The ones from the shop are stamped with the Sadowsky logo so they match perfectly. I use mine for drop d only but you could go lower if you needed. Stays in tune really well as long as you tune it properly. Instructions are included. A small but wise investment IMHO!

For those that have both newer and older NYC basses has the VTC changed throughout the years? Just curious with some of the recent findings lately.

For those of you that have P equiped basses in 4 and 5 string configs. What are the differences betweeen the 4 string P pickup (IIRC made for Roger by Dimarzio) and the 5 string (made by Nordstrand). I'm talking about tone, I can see the different polepieces.

been using nothing but the rv-5 since i got it; partly to acclimate, and partly cause it's just kewl like dat

Yessir, that's from last song, last set, last night.
RV5>F1>UL410

The F1 isn't quite as snappy on top as the M6 is, so I had active treble bumped a tad more than with the M6, and passive tone cut a tad less than with the M6.
F1 was set with low bass trimmed off a tad, treble bumped up a tad, vle off, and whatever MB call their contour (escapes me for the moment) at just under 9 o'clock.
