Pearl.I've just put on a pearl pickguard. I'm digging it so far. I like the black also for a classic look but I think the pearloid makes it a bit different. Here:

...I prefer the black, the pearloid is a little distracting, but, interesting too. I've toyed with changing mine to basic white, but in NYC, we wear black. I love Fran's comments.
Wadge, I don't think you'll have mixed feelings after you gig it. When I first got my MS5 it sounded "ok" at home. From the first note on it's first gig, the band members were turning with smiles and nods of approval
