Club Sadowsky!!!

Slightly OT:

I decided to keep my Sea Foam Green RV4 even though I could use the money from it's sale. Anyway, I have been debating new tuners. It has the original "Sadowsky" stamped HipShot HB1 I believe. It also has D-tuner which I kind of use but wouldn't miss if it was gone. I decided that I have a 5 string (Yamaha BB605 with Barts) that I can use if I really need the low stuff.

I am debating some UltraLite tuners. Alex from Sadowsky said that these should work as replacements:

Anyone else done this replacement? Is it a noticable difference in weight?

For what it is worth, I evaluated the Ultralite tuners for our 4 strings many years ago and found that the reduced mass on the headstock increased dead spots. I suspect this does not happen on our 5 strings due to the overall increased mass of the neck.

I have a question for you Sadowskiites (Sadowskiphiles? Sadowskyists?). I played a couple of Metro 5s yesterday. One was RS5, the other UVM5. The RS5 had action quite high compared to my Zon. The UVM5 was much lower. The shop did a quick tweak of the bridge and truss rod (there was a lot of relief initially) and it was lower but still not the same as the UVM5. Also the RS5 developed an odd buzz/flutter sound on the B string. It was subtle, and most evident playing it open but also when it was fretted. Maybe it was rattling on the string retainer? I read about that earlier in the thread. Otherwise tone was awesome, especially with a bit of bass dialed in...perfect eq spot and sound.

I know that the Metro won't get stupid-low action like my Zon, but that is fine - I'm looking for something different from a sound/playing perspective. I'm just wondering about variability between the Metros. I was thinking of buying a set of strings and having the shop put them on the RS5 and seeing how that changes things, as they are the original strings about a few months old. The UVM5 played and sounded great, I'm just not a clear ash body kinda guy...I have a soft spot for sunburst.

All Metros should be able to be set-up to play really well. If the dealer can't set it up to your liking, don't buy it.

Thanks for the reply. That was my thinking as they were both impeccably finished. Any thoughts on old strings and any oddities? Tone was strong and even on the UVM5, with the RS5 the B had the odd overtone when the action was changed. Maybe I should just order one direct from you guys...beautiful instruments.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I just can't get over how good my Sadowsky sounds. I had the opportunity to play in church today for the first time and my tone was absolutely perfect (wish I could say the same about my playing, but...). I probably had a dozen or so compliments afterward. About half of them were about how nice looking the bass was and the other about how good it sounded - fat and with a real presence in the mix. Funny how their comments echoed what I hear other Sadowsky owners rave about!

It felt really good playing - since we moved to the UK, I haven't had the opportunity to play, really. Nice to get back in the saddle...

Lots of overtones often means bad strings (especially if it's a tapered string, sometimes those can come "loose", but it can also sometimes be caused by pickups being too close to the strings. If they lowered the action and didn't lower the pickups at the same time, that could at least be part of it.

Thanks. Will do. My expectations are high, but I'm not quite sure what to expect (save impeccable craftsmanship and tonal versatility). My hope is that it will have a thicker bottom, like a good P, but also have a strong mid-range/top-end presence for some clarity. I know the Sadowsky pre well, so I can only imagine that it will add much to the fundamental tone.

Have any other TB'ers discussed these original p's before?? Been searching but not finding much..

I'm gasing for a Sadowsky right now: Sunburst Metro P/J 5-string with maple fretboard, black pickguard and VTC with Vol, blend, bass and treble. That's all I want :D But, being a broke, 18 year old college student deosn't even avail funds for a set of Sadowsky strings, let alone a bass :bawl: Keep posting your beautiful basses!

The pickup height was my first though and they dropped it down a bit. It was an odd sound - kinda like the speaker was cut/flapping. But subtle. The other UVM5 didn't do it.

Does anyone know what the current Metros ship with wrt strings? Is the B tapered at the bridge end? My local shops don't have Sadowsky strings so if I'm going to put another set on I want to get close. I usually use DR lo-riders on my Zon. Also I assume they are 45/65/85/105/130. I need to figure out if I want to try and get this set up or just order an incoming one from NY.
