While our necks do have a very smooth Satin feel to them, Tom had asked If I could do it for him. I had done it on my own basses, and the result came out very close to a "Worn played" bass. A few basses that Tom did own at one point and sold also have had this done.
I do not sand all the way to bare wood, just take some Nitro coats off, so they are still protected. Our necks are very Stable, and I have yet to have any issues with any of my basses since I sanded them.
Rob (bikeplate) played my UV4 and I think he could comment on what he thought about it.

If the neck is a liitle sticky you can use "0000" steal wool to remove some of the finish and give it that played in feel.

Yeah, and without actually removing the protection of the finish. It still won't feel like wood, so it won't satisfy everyone, but this is a very cool "trick".
I routinely do this with a green Scotch Brite scouring pad to keep the neck satin-y.

Hey folks, I finally had a (albeit short) sampling of the new Blue Labels at lunch today. All I have to say is, they sound darn good so far! Have a gig with them tonight, but dang, they were SUWHEET in the store at lunch!

I think that Lisa worked on my standard transparent black J bass with the soapbars. Nice work.
