The ash/maple combo in a PJ5 seems to do a better job of focusing the B-string and making it 'pop'. Would definitely try both, if possible, before making a choice.

This is exactly my experience as well. I had a really incredible alder/rw PJ5, but it just didn't quite do what I wanted. The ash/maple combo totally meshed with me immediately.

Well... I am a changed man. I ordered two new sets of Sadowsky strings. For the past 9 years, I have been using stainless strings. DR HighBeams and Low Beams. But, when I got my new (used) Sadowsky, it had a set of the blue nickels on it. While I did like the tone, I was curious how the SS's sounded. So, I bought a set and a set of nickel (just in case I did not like the SS ones) and SS Blues.
I slapped the new set of SS's on the bass and... well... I LOVE THE nickels. To my ear, on this bass, the nickels just sound (and slightly feel) better. They have a nice fat mid-range to them compared to the SS's which have that scooped tone.
If I still had my Atelier, I am almost positive the SS's would sound better to me, but the ash/morado Sadowsky just likes the nickels.
Anyway, just thought I would share. So, if anyone has a new set of nickel blues 40-125 I would love to trade you. My SS's are 45-130.

A few examples of the RV5 PJ - the first night I had it (last weekend), playing a pick-up party gig. Have played with the guitarist and keys (though he was playing a midi marimba setup and it was his first gig with that), the drummer was from another (non-jazz) band sitting in. Just a Zoom sitting in the room, bass is a bit down in the mix, Ashdown ABM-500 and single EA VL-110 cab. I'm not a slapper, instead playing mostly fretless for the past 10 years. Pretty inspiring bass...makes you want to mess around and try new things. Having frets is crazy

Deja vu? I remember talking to one of your shop guys, thinking about buying something almost identical from you, maybe three years ago. Yes? How's this one?
Black & Blue: My new 24-5 came with Black SS strings on it - which I haven't used before. I actually liked the feel and sound of them a lot - with the exception of the B string.
I'm curious if anyone here uses them. The B is lifeless compared to the rest of the set and relatively floppy.
The Blue's on my other basses have really punchy and tight B strings. I'm betting it's just a bad string but was curious if anyone else had that experience with the Black labels.
