Chef, I really like the Sunbeams on my ash/maple/big single NYC 5. It's a very nice match.
On my ash/maple/big single 4 string I usually have John Pearse nickels. Great strings but AFAIK they don't make a 5 string set. Well, if they do I've never seen it.

For Nickel strings I suggest the Thomastik "Jazz Bass" JR345 set, they are polished round wounds that have almost no string noise. The light gauges are a little lighter but seem to wear just fine. I use to run them on my Alder/Morado RV5 and loved them. Mike Fredericks turned me on to them. They seem to last a bit longer too, but they aren't cheap. I haven't seen them for less then 65$ on line. If you want to try a set PM me, I have one set left over, I'll sell cheap since I know longer have a second bass.

As far as stainless, I'm with K on the Sadowsky blue steels. The only ones I like close are the DR Marcus Millers, but they don't have tapered wound low B's.

I know that sound, it's a great tone. My favorite is whacking the open E and letting it ring for a measure or so. Great sound.
Was in Manhattan for work today and hoofed to Jay Street to visit Sadowsky HQ just before closing time. Roger and Kevin were great hosts and let me play every bass in the showroom while I thawed. The only thing I walked out of the shop with was a 500K volume pot, but I'm happy with it because it made an already great bass better. Drilled and soldered it in earlier tonight, and I'll give it a full review as soon as I have time.

Hi,
I did actually. Got it in the heat of the moment while a friend gave me a call "Guess what, I'm in the Sadowsky shop, right now!! what do you want?" (Well, I wanted the Will Lee bass that was available...) so I decide to try the drop D tuner, and a couple of 500K pots.
It's a perfect fit, took only 5 minuets to install. Very smooth and accurate, great quality of course.
While Hipshot state you can use a 0.105 E string with no problem I found it's hard to keep a totally straight neck if you want a buzz free D string. I think you'd have to be more picky choosing the right strings. A student of mine is using the Hipshot HB1 on a Stingray and he had to switch to 0.110 E to add more tension. Another (expected) downside is the added weight to the neck. After a couple of days I decided It's not going to see enough use to justify all this so I took it off. Still, If you think you'll use it it's a great upgrade.
Haven't gotten to install the pots yet...

My RV4 came with the D-tuner on it. I love it. Yeah, I suppose it ads weight, but since the bass came this way I don't know the difference. I have been debating if my "main" (that means the one expensive bass I can afford to have) bass should be a 5 as I've played for years or a 4. Well, I've found I don't miss the B string that much at all. And when I do want a low note, it usually isn't lower than D so I'm covered.

I have the same issues with the detuners, but mainly, I just don't like having to change my thinking to get lower notes. That's why they make 5 string basses. :)

Now, if we could just get a WL5 on the market... :)

I have been using Hipshot D-Tuners since the mid 80's. Sure, they add a little neck diving but nothing that would make me remove it. Seriously, if you used them alot there is not a whole lot of thinking involved. I bring both my 4 and 5 to gigs and play standard, drop D and 5 string without ever thinking too much about it. A few times I have forgot to move out of drop D and had to improvise a bit before moving it back in the up position. But, that just makes it more fun! I never owned a 4 string without a D-Tuner. Plus, Sadowsky has them made with their logo so it matches perfectly with the other tuners. Nice!
