Watching to see what you think. Don't have the flow to pick up the RVPJ5 if it goes, but will use info to inform my long-range goals.

A very quick and dirty comparison between the the two basses (NYC JJ Ash/Maple and Metro RV5PJ)

That is with preamp on but no bass or treble added. First is mixed, second is bridge, third is neck. I'll leave it to you to figure out which is which :p

Wow!!! They both sound great! I am gonna have to say the NYC is first and the 5PJ is second...... I just woke up and so did my ears, so we'll see if that is correct.

Interesting observation. I've been giving some thought over the last few months to "old vs new" regarding Sadowskys.

I've heard a few people say over recent years that the early Sadowsky's are somehow superior to the newer ones. Over the course of the last 18 months I've bought and owned 8-10 2004-2009 basses and 4 early/mid 90's Sadowskys.

While certainly not a scientific experiment by any stretch, I can honestly say that the instruments that Roger is putting out "today" are some of the best he's done. The necks are perfect, they're super stable, the fretwork is flawless, the electronics are quiet and truly useful (which is actually rare as far as onboard pre amps go), and the fit and finish is among the absolute best in the business.

They are not inexpensive basses, but they are one of those products that I have complete faith in. Every bass player should have the experience of owning and using one -- it really is special!

Sad-WOW-sky..... Thats probably exactly the NYC I would order if I had the coin for one right now. Beautiful bass!

Hey Vic- how are you diggin your metro PJ5? I'm getting more and more interested in those..

As a side note, (and a testament to sadowksy) I got to borrow a friends older metro rosewood/alder 4 the other day. I played a gig that night and decided to check out the bass during soundcheck (usually I would play my DJ4 and F AC5 with that band). The sadowsky sounded flippin outrageously good. Immediately after pluggin it in, the whole band turned and was like "what bass is THAT?". I was super impressed with the tone and overall great feel of the electronics, and through my LMII/UL2410 it flat out killed. Can't imagine using more than 10% of that bass boost though. Needless to say, my other jazz 4 didn't make an appearance that night...

Finally, I can say I get what the fuss is all about...

yeah man, even my guitarist and banjo player buddies could hear the diff. right away. And those guys have seen and heard some serious high end pieces at my place in the last year or so, that have come in for BMM reviews. While many basses have cool tones and unique voicings, the sadowsky sounded pertinear perfect, as a "modern jazz bass" tone, to my ears.
and I've never really been an alder rosewood guy..

I love my older RV4. I don't know if I'll be able to sell it after my MV5 arrives. I don't know if I can afford both. I may have to try really hard.

After having played around with both after a night, I can say that for me at least, having an alder/rw bass in PJ config is going to be a necessity. The ash/maple is a beaut and it defines the "modern jazz" tone, but for the r&b/blues/soul think I feel the pj/rw a little more. If you love your RV4 and like playing a 4, I'd figure out a way to keep both. But maybe in JJ the rw and maple aren't that different.

I can't get over how comfortable the NYC is to play though. I just need to mess around with the knobs and playing positions to find the tone. I haven't had a J-bass in about 15+ years. ALso need to play it through my amp instead of direct and listening through cans. I am finding that I like a little more bass dialed up in the pre with the JJ. And I still think that both basses actually sound a little better to my ear passive.
