Hey Vic question for you. Is there any difference between the fancy top and natural bass? I have a hard time understanding why you own two of the same basses with the only difference being the color. Or at least as far as I can see.

As always with the STL GTG's I hope to make it, and if I did, I'd bring whatever anyone wanted me to. I have a RAV4, so I can get a good amount of stuff in there... especially if it's just basses. :)

Yeah, I definitely like other woods on stuff, but I've been an ash man for quite some time now. :D Rotate through all that shipping, and be without for that kinda' time? Yowza! OUCH! :D

Yeah, the natural one is a solid body with SC's, and the figured top is a chambered body with HC's. The figured top one still most generally sounds "like a Sadowsky J", but is a bit more modern sounding, which is kinda' cool... imparts a sweeter slap tone and generally a slightly smoother sound through the mids, and the chambered body makes it just a tad punchier on the attack. The SC based J5 has more of that classic grind to it from the pickups and the solid body, and the solid body (which also yields a little bit more weight, tho not a ton) rings the notes out a little more.

At the end of the day, either one could be "the one" for anybody, but circumstances worked out for me to have both, so I have those subtle options to choose from.

As an aside, the older bass also gives me the ability to have a totally smokin' J bass to play in certain clubs where the fancy pants J just wouldn't quite look right. :)

That sounds like enough of a difference to me, pretty cool. I would have liked to have played a set of single coils to hear for myself.

Looks like you may have blue steels on the burst basses and hi beams or something different on Nat'y?

yeppers, except I'm gonna' try something else on mr natural next. not sure about nickels or ss's, but prolly loriders or maybe something else.

lowB_2277 -- I tried this bass on Monday and it sounded AWESOME. I ended up ordering a left-handed one and can't wait until it comes in!! (6-7 months).

I played it yesterday, honestly the first time I've ever played a 24-5. I'm not sure that the modern style is my cup of tea tonally but it's a beautiful instrument. As is every bass that's hanging on the wall in the shop.

I went in with a very specific interest but played just about everything, man those guys are nice about giving you the run of the place:bassist: and I walk out of there thinking the Burgundy mist PJ was a great bass, the Will Lee Sonic Blue shop bass was pretty awesome as was the inca silver JJ5.

If you guys didn't get a chance to catch Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday Night, Randy Jackson was set-up for an interview, and to (Kinda) sit in with the House Band (The Roots)...

So I was nice enough to lend Randy MY Vintage 5 Buckeye Burl.

It starts at about 27 Minutes. {but there is also a nice opening scene with my bass in front of the drum Kit.}

A little overdriven Tone wise (he actually had the Treble Boosted full!!), but still kinda cool!
