+1 I too preferred the HC's in my alder/RW Sadowsky, where that wider, purer tone yin yanged nicely with the warmer voicing, purer treble response, and 'less big' low end of that spec. The singles (the Sadowsky Seymours, not so much the Nordstrands) really speak well with the ash/maple Sadowsky J's... grind, bite, punch:bassist:

Interestingly, with both pickups dimed, I find the Sadowsky singles actually quieter than the HC's... really wonderful pickups.

If you generally play places that are relatively "polite" to SC's, or if you don't care that much about hum, or, if you rarely do more than just slightly favor one pickup when not fully blending, IMHO, the SC's are "the stuff". :)

I always blend and never favor one pickup. The 5'er is used mostly with the Original project I sub with. Heavy music, lots of B string usage since the guitars tune to C. The venues are usually big clubs or events with multiple bands.

I hear for SC they are pretty quiet. Would you say the SC over the Nords???

Sorry, I did not make myself clear.
I wanted to say, that it is rather difficult to find a similar bass in Europe to trade, therefore I am thinking about sending mine back to the shop and order a ash-bodied PJ.

It's a pretty good system. I believe Roger reduces the consignment fee if you apply the sale price to a new instrument, and they of course take care of everything from the moment they receive the bass. I sold my alder/RW NYC through them, and was very pleased with the service and the program. Of course, it will cost you in a pretty hefty consigment fee, and shipping would also be quite a bit, so you have to decide if the extra $500-$750 or so it will cost for shipping and the consignment fee is worth a 'no hassle' sort of deal versus selling the bass yourself in the EU.

Yes. Not because I don't like the Nordstrands a LOT, but because I just think it's best to use pickups that were specifically voiced for the bass in question. Roger has spent a LOT of time designing his sound, so I'd ALWAYS opt for what Roger has available first before ever trying anything else.

I also very much agree with Ken that his SC's are among the quietest I've ever heard. If you never solo or even favor one pickup over the other, I can't imagine you ever having a noise problem.

I was at the shop last week Monday with my friend who is killer player & we both agreed black 4 string Will Lee model was winner of the day. That has single coil pu & sounds awesome. I would pick it up in a heartbeat if I had money.
We played 3 5 string basses but it all sounds little strange to our ears after playing Will Lee. I assume it is because of nature of pick up as 5 string humcancelling pick wired with 2+3 coil while 4 string is 2+2 coil. That's what I heard from Roger last year when I was at the shop.
anyway, go with single coil pu if you possible. I will go that direction if I order or buy one in future.

Yes, but that's only relevant when comparing 5str HC to 4str HC. You were comparing 5str HC to 4str SC (in the Will Lee), so you were going from a single coil for all 4 strings to a split coil that was 2+3. That's a much bigger tonal jump, and your experience is no surprise.

I do agree with your main point though, is going from the purity and grind of a SC to the somewhat more modern souding HC pickups would be somewhat of a "downgrade" tonally by a lot of people's standards. I know I generally prefer the sound of SC pickups for the most part, but don't get me wrong, I do like the HC sound a lot too.

That settles it. Since your Burst (5249) Vintage J5 has HC's you must sell it to me and order one with SC PUPs in it. I knew I would find you a logical reason to sell it to me.

Nope. Not even close. :)

The Lakland Owner's Group started in February 2007, and the Sadowsky Club started in December that same year. They're currently on Part 41, whereas we're on Part 13. I think they kinda' have us beat pretty easily. :)

I've heard mods comment on how quickly they rotate that one. :)

I'm flattered by your appreciation for my bass, but your logic is based on the flawed assumption that I don't already have a V5 with SC's in it. I do. #4098. :)
