Club Sadowsky!!!

Hmmm...
this is not my experience with my "same spec'd Valenti" which is much more grindy and punchy than the RV.
The Valenti just kills, driving right thru the mix, and is very aggressive.
The RV5-with the hc's being the only spec difference-does deeper, and higher-but seems much more polite, hifi, and has a voice that doesn't meet my personal needs.
True that the AC is more old school, yes, but, it too has a direct punch and grind the hc's don't do, for me.

Flip the RV and be happy then:smug:

Cory's latest Sadowsky... (quick) carpet shots! :)

The color's a little richer in person, but it's late, and I'm too lazy to beef up the pics. :)

I really love that color combination and after spending some time with this bass, I find it's much brighter then 4311 even though they both sport sc's. I just love them both!

A Sadowsky RV will never sound like an A-C LG, singles or not. Not better or worse, but I agree, if you want a more vintage tone, the LG will work for you, and I've heard nothing better for that vibe. Putting singles in an RV will in NO way move that toward a more traditional vintage tone IMO and IME. It will darken it up a bit though, but to me, that's not really what the Sadowsky basses are about.

Not a big risk in trying the swap though.
Putting SC's in an RV darkens it up? I woulda' figured maybe the other way around, tho not at the really sizzly high end, but maybe down in the more general treble region, which I'd think would be a good thing if you wanted more of that kind of sound.

I don't think anyone would expect a Sadowsky to sound like an AC, but if there are certain tonal attributes that are more common to the alder/morado(or rosewood)/SC combo that he's missing in the RV, it sure makes sense to me to put SC's in there and have positive expectations.

The singles have less 'brightness' and also less upper treble to my ear in any of the spec's they go into (mids, mids, mids). That is a 'good' change with the very bright ash/maple to me (which can sound very harsh and bright and ganky with the HC's through some rigs/PA's), and a 'bad' change with the smooth, round, more polite voicing of the alder/RW models (again, too much of a good thing to my ear personally). IMO and IME.

I like the shift from upper treble to upper mid grind with the ash/maple... not so much with the alder/RW, since that 'upper mid' sort of response is not in the nature of that wood spec to my ear.

humcancelling j pickups in any bass = :spit:
SC NAZI!!! ;) :D :D :D :D

Boy, I gotta' say, as I've proven many times here, I've really really been getting into the SC's these days, and not just on my Sadowsky basses, either. However, at least for me, I do still like the tone of a good set of HC J pickups. Not the really over the top modern ones, but the ones that at least try to maintain as much of that grunt as possible. I think Carey's NJS picukps are really nice, and darned if I don't really dig a good old set of DiMarzio Model J (DP123) pickups in my Geddy.

I used to really think the more modern sounding pickups were cooler (such as the standard UltraJazz from DiMarzio), but of late I've gotten a lot more into less scooped sounding pickups.

I'm not done playing with pickups in my J basses, either. More on that later tho. :)

I will never own a bass with HC pickups again... period. The piezo's in the Rob Allen type basses are cool for that vibe, so I make an exception there.

I do like the Sadowsky HC's in the RV models (since those basses have very little to do with a 'Fender' vibe anyway), but I don't own one and won't own one:D

the clips ive heard of the dimarzio area j have sounded decent, but then ill end up putting them in my bass and regret it. i might try a set in one of these fernandes j's i have headed my way this week.

Interesting stuff. I've been contemplating the SC's in my RV5 to make a run at some of those grindy upper mids. FWIW, my alder/rosewood Mike Lull M5V, with the Seymour Duncan SC's, has that flavor...in spades. More so than my ash/maple one, although that one certainly has plenty of bark. I had the impression that making the swap on my Sadowsky would give it that boost, but if not....hmmm. I know the swap isn't a huge deal, and I've certainly wasted $200 on worse experiments, but I'd really rather make an informed decision...measuring as often as needed, but cutting once. Thoughts?

Don't get me wrong, they'll never touch the tone of a great set of SC's, BUT, among HC J pickups, I do like them a lot. Pretty straight forward, not trying to emphasize or accentuate anything in particular a whole lot. I kinda' like that.

Jerry,

Well my sadowsky is ash/morado combo and although it sounds really good, it does have a more polite scooped sound to my ear. This is not bad, but with the lack of a mid control you can't add any mids from the bass. I am diggin' the tone of single coils and really want a bit more grind. For my tone goals I believe the ash/morado combo paired with SCs is going to be it for this bass. Anybody need a set of HCs after the SC's get installed?

I both agree and somewhat disagree with this, having swapped HC's for SC's in my old RV5 when I had it. Yes, it does 'darken' the sound in that there is less treble extension with the SC's which somewhat diminishes the slap tone on this alder/morado model. For me though, the SC's enhanced the inherent midrange of that bass and gave it a truly burpy sounding bridge pickup sound and overall a better lowmid kick when both pups were centered.

Of course, that whole pickup swap, as well as me eventually dumping that bass was only one more step towards 'the perfect Sadowsky' for my needs: The ash/maple PJ5!!!! Not that I still don't crave 7 or 8 more Sadowsky axes in various pups/woods/models. And now they have to offer a roasted neck option!!! I do have a 'dream' model that would just kill: ash body J5 with SC's, and an ALL-WENGE neck!

Wow. You were doing great until you said all wenge neck. :)

Just MHO, but I would think that would both have neck dive issues as well as drive me crazy with that upper mid choke the wenge has. Probably a stellar slap tone, but for fingerstyle, which is by far what I do most, that little bit of choke the wenge has would just drive me insane (as it has in the past on other basses). :)

Again, just MHO, FWIW, etc. :)

Forgot to ask...

So you'd say it reduced the sizzle at the high end, but would you say it beefed up not only the mids but also the lower treble region or just the mids?

:D I was mainly thinking about how ash/wenge was my favorite wood combo for MTD's, but how if I could get the same vibe with that Sadowsky playability and tone, that might just do it for me for a mainly slap-style bass. I bet it would be even cooler as a Modern 5.......hmmmmmmm.......probably more of a chance of Roger making a 6 string than that happening.

It's hard to say here, because I was only using Sadowsky flats with this bass. From what I remember, yes, it did make the treble more musical and less 'sharp', which is how I percieve the treble extension on a morado-board when slapped. This in turn might be due to a lower-voiced treble. With flats, the HC to SC swap made a HUGE difference for fingerstyle punch and lowmid kick. IME at least.

I have a Standard 4 with HC pups. I also owned a Standard 5 with HC then switched to SC. The SC on the 5er was great.

However, the HC on the 4 bangers are way different than the ones found on the 5 strings. The 5 string HC pups are scooped in the mids more than the 4 string ones. My Standard 4 sounds so good I will not change a thing on it. The Standard 5 was different. I fought with that bass for a while. The SC was the best it sounded. Now, some lucky person owns it and I am sure they are very happy with the tone.

I got a MV4-WL coming in soon with singles so I will have a good idea of the tone difference between them.

But, the point I am trying to make here is for HC pups there is a difference between the 4 and 5 string versions. I love the 4 string HC pups in my Standard 4!

Hey Joe.... yes, I'm only talking about 5 strings, which is most of my experience with the Sadowsky basses.
