The shop had made a MV4 in the same color/wood scheme a few years ago and I'd had it pegged as my favorite bass look for a very long time before I ordered. When it came to ordering, I just said to Roger and Kevin that I wanted a bass exactly like #5021 (TBer "natselection" owns it, IIRC) but in a Will Lee model.

I play in a classic rock cover band so I've moved away from five-stringers over the last few years.

That said, I do agree the PJ is a more modern sound, and I feel it is scooped a little bit in the upper mids. I think that's what contributes to that "modern" sound, and also the somewhat sweeter sizzlier slap tone. The P pickup is all about low mid series mode grunt (all "properly wired" P pickups have the coils wired in series mode, which always adds gain and grunt... just try any American Fender J with the S1 switch or Musicman SR5H in series mode). Ballzy rock and roll. P basses and SVT amps. The neck J pickup is a lot more even sounding to my ear... more going on in the upper mids, and not quite as gutsy in the lower mids. The bridge pickups are a wash since they're in the same location... HOWEVER... if you have the previous non-Nordstrand pickup set (or for those who might have a PJ4), that's gonna' add a bit to the scoop too. The newer Nordstrand based HC J5 pickups sound a lot stronger in the mids to me, but the overall blended tone is still gonna' be fairly modern with that same upper mid scoop.

That was exactly what I was thinking and what did surprise me. My flow is rather straightforward:

2 Sads -> Turbo Tuner ST200 -> TAB Funkenwerk DI -> SA200 -> Fender Bassman 4x12" cab or Aguilar db212.

In the meantime I put Alleva SS strings on the PJ. This made it sound a bit more ballsy!

Not sure if I posted my Sadowsky NYC before.

Such a cool bass. It has a drop D tuner which is more useful than I could have ever imagined.

Considering TI Jazz flats when the current strings need changing.

Great bass :D

Getting first shot at the bass is my going labor rate for close friends. Others don't even get in the door. :D Don't worry, my digital soldering station and organic water soluble flux will treat you and your bass well. :)

My Will Lee took a little getting used to. The ergonomics were a little off for me at first...until one day I actually felt that loosening the strap and lowering the bass a little from where I play normally might help.

Voilà...that did the trick. I have no idea why it feels better, but it does. Just as comfy as my other Sads...go figure?:rolleyes:

First off, great discussion on the PJ vs JJ sc's. I can't wait to visit the Sadowsky shop in 2 weeks and try some different ones out. In my mind, I'm thinking a Will Lee and then restringing my JJ SC with flats or keeping my JJ SC with rounds and getting a Metro PJ to string up with flats. Really not sure at this point.

Oh yeah! Just sayin'... :)

It's like a whole new bass. The sizzle is stronger, the tone is more focused, my gosh, the B string came out of the shadows big time. Major improvement IMHO.

I keep my PJ strung with flats and my JJ SC strung with rounds, but I only own two basses and, truth be told, I don't need more, but if I had them, I'd also keep a JJ SC strung with flats and a PJ with rounds...ah! and two PJ fretless with both, rounds and flats.
