So Vic politely suggested at some point in the thread that strings can make a significant difference. Of course, I know this, but I snubbed him nonetheless.

Moral. Don't snub Vic!!!

I was off today so I get around to putting the lo-riders on the JJ. It really made a big difference in the bottom end and punch. I think the old strings were just too light for me. And maybe a bit tame also. I think they were hi-beams. I went with .45s and the feel is a lot stiffer. It is also a little grittier. I'm happier and think the bass is more me know. Even though I still think the PJ has a little more booty to it.

I bought three packs of these lo-rider 45s. I am sure I will slap on the PJ as well when I get the guts back in it.

BTW Sadowsky SS Blues work in a very similar way. I use a lot of those too. :)

Try taking the pup covers off & pressing a piece of that clear packaging tape on the steel dust. The dust might embed in the adhesive & come off the pole pieces. Just sayin'.

Seriously dude, the only thing you need to justify a Sadowsky is the desire to own one and the money to back it up. Only a total jerk, whose opinion you shouldn't care about, would think you shouldn't own the bass just 'cause you're not some kind of friggin' virtuoso.

Otherwise, I'd have to sell off every bass I own except maybe my Geddy Lee J (and trust me, that ain't happnin')! :)

Save yer money (if you need to), buy the bass, and be happy. DONE. :)

I sold my Geddy Lee to help fund my M5-24 and I'm loving it!

Don't worry about the other guys. There's ALWAYS a bigger fish. The key is, don't let what they can do make you feel bad about the fact that you can't do it yet. Don't ever say that about yourself. You play to the best of your abilities right now. Get a Sadowsky if you want one. Heck, I did. I don't gig or play in a local band. I play for my pure enjoyment and personal hobby. Then one day, my co-worker asked me to record a bass line to a song he recorded on his guitar. So now, I record my bass and send the sound files thru email to my guitarist buddy who mixes our music together and there you go - we record cover songs together and it is a blast!! I'm getting a little better each time too.

Vic is the only one here on the forum that has heard the tunes I've done. I'm shy. :p :hiding: (and now, P. Bass has heard a sample)
My secret is out. The cat got outta da bag!

So go out and get yourself a Sadowsky - you deserve it! :hyper:

I think Vic had that same vibe. I must be getting better or wait a minute, it must be my Sadowsky! That's it!
You know, I started out on super inexpensive basses and I felt like I was fighting them rather than playing them.

I'm not sure about the effect of steel wool dust on a pickup. I've done it too, many times. Never on a Sadowsky though.

All I'm saying is why use a steel wool when you can use sand paper and do a better job.

Steel wool can do the job just like a rock can drive a nail. But then again we use a hammers.

I know how some of you Sadowsky guys are and before tonight I never connected with one. Mind you I'd only played a half dozen or so, but I'd never experienced that aha moment with any of them. I just picked up the 1989 5er from richst (thankx!), it came this afternoon a few hours before my gig. Hell yeah I'm trying it on the gig, after making sure it works.
It was the most satisfied I'd ever been with a jazz bass on a gig. It was a loud rock/r&b gig and for the most part I played the p/u's even, with a few ventures favoring the bridge side. I changed tones a handful of times but never because I wasn't diggin what was goin on. The last set or so was also pretty dark as it was at the beach on an unlit balcony. I felt like I knew the bass well enough already I didn't need to see much.
Now I get why you guys are lifers with these. Very stoked here! This baby shows a bunch of hours of play and I have every intention of adding to it.
