Club Sadowsky!!!

I felt like I knew the bass well enough already I didn't need to see much.
Now I get why you guys are lifers with these. Very stoked here! This baby shows a bunch of hours of play and I have every intention of adding to it.

I was very intrigued by this bass when it popped up. A true "vintage" Sadowsky!!! I was very interested and thought the price was comparably attractive, but I didn't really know what to think about the absence of the modern Sadowsky preamp and pickups. It seems it still has its own very special vibe.

I am very glad to hear it found a home.

So now, I record my bass and send the sound files thru email to my guitarist buddy who mixes our music together and there you go - we record cover songs together and it is a blast!! I'm getting a little better each time too.

Vic is the only one here on the forum that has heard the tunes I've done. I'm shy. :p :hiding: (and now, P. Bass has heard a sample)

Finally got a pic of both my Sadowskys together. My good ol' trusty Standard 4 and my new (to me) NYC Will Lee.
Got to play the Will Lee this weekend at a gig. So comfy. The mid boost really adds to this bass. The Standard 4 HC
pups have great highs and lows and slightly scooped mids. The singles in the WL are a bit tamer up above and the mid
boost adds that growl. It was set at the 500 wide setting and I pretty much used it all night. I'm going to mess around
with all the settings and see how they work for my tone goals. I would like to get the 2 basses sounding simular.
Either way the WL is a keeper. I got to get use to the vintage style too. The pickguard is messing with me a bit.

We are on vacation in NYC and just finished up a visit to Sadowsky. They just received the first batch of Will Lee Metros. I lucked out and there was one at only 8.5#. After trying a bunch of basses, I went with that one. Ash/maple in transparent black with a black pearl pickguard. I will post some pics when I get home bc we used the camera and not my phone. Roger was quite nice and Kevin could not have been more helpful! Psyched!!!!

Woah! Another among the "first bass brethren". :D

I got the first Metro MV5-24 and you got the first Metro WL (right?) Nice.

Oh and yeah, not the least bit surprised by how great Roger and Kevin were for you. I literally have yet to have anything less than a completely stellar experience with anyone at that shop, and Roger and Kevin set the standard on that stuff, IMHO.

LOL, that was the bass I had paid in full then cancelled it and bought the NYC in my earlier post. Great looking bass. Let us know how you like it! Here is a pic of it.

Hey, Joe, speaking of the WL's, I know they come with those wonderful SC pickups, but I was just thinking, what if someone had a lot of rude venues to play and/or just really liked to do a lot of pickup soloing... I was thinking someone could put a set of HC's in a WL and use that mid boost circuit to beef up the tone and kinda' make up a little bit for some of what folks hear as a bit less punch in the HC's. Interesting to think about anyway.

Part of what also made me think of this is when I had a WL for a while in the recent past. I ended up turning the mid boost way down because with those SC's, it was really easy for it to be too much. Maybe even kinda' think of it as a scoop control on a bass with HC's installed? Maybe set the mid boost a certain way, and make that your "normal" extra punchy fingerstyle mode, and then pop it out to scoop it a bit for a sweeter slap tone?

Anyway, just some random WL model thoughts. :)

Here is a picture of the most vintage NYC that I have owned. Didn't dig the trans purple and the lack of a low b, but I did like the tone.

Some interesting thoughts.....I might entertain that idea with HC pups. They sound so good in my Standard 4 that those with the mid boost you could get a more balanced pup. I am going to try the 800 wide setting tomorrow at practice to see what that does. I love the options available.

Cool. Another thing that got me thinking about this was the uber-bridgey tone used on some of the stuff you cover. You'd be a good candidate for soloing, rather than just favoring, the bridge. While bumping the mids would give you great bite, it of course isn't the same sound as favoring or soloing the bridge, which I really think those songs call for. That got me to thinking about putting HC's in, which then got me to thinking about recovering some of the punch with that mid circuit.

Anyway, FWIW.

With the PJ on the bench, I played the SC JJ in worship yesterday. Man I love the tone of this thing since I swapped out the strings. It was just too meek for me before.

I probably play more double bass now than electric, and I think that has given me far less tolerance for lighter strings. I just can't hardly play a super slinky setup with light strings and uber low action like I once did. I actually RAISED the action on my bass, and it made me happier.

It seems to me that bass now has more natural low-end now and further, it is more tolerant of boosting the bass and not getting boomy or muddy. I had all the bottom end I needed yesterday and was delighted!!!

Spent another few hours with it today, and I have just about worn the banjo twang off the lo-riders. It is really starting to speak to me now. Amazing bass.

BTW, I get the whole argument that the HC pickups' scooped nature lends to a more favorable slap tone, but I couldn't help myself today. I was slapping the JJ to my heart's content. I have never sounded that good slapping. It was truly inspiring.

I may even worked a few "Guitar Center" riffs!!! :hiding: :)


All that said, I am eager to get my replacement pickup for the PJ. I want to experience it fully with my strings, my setup, the newer PUs. The may be an ongoing battle for my affections. I know. It is a tough problem to have.
