This will be #2 for me. Roger's customer service when I had a pickup problem with my first bass really sold me on Sadowsky as a reputable company that stands behind their product!

Oh, and they sound great.

In my case, I don't think so, as mine weighs right at 9 lbs...I don't, personally, consider that "heavier," though I guess some might, compared to some of the very light nyc's...

as a point of ref, all my 5 strings weigh right at that 9 lb mark.

Let me say first off that I'm a huge Sadowsky fan. I love the tone, workmanship, and customer service. If I had to have just one bass (God forbid!!) it'd be a Sadowsky.

Having said that, though, I'm experiencing something odd with my recently acquired NYC Vintage 4 (#5399 - obligatory pic here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]). Whenever I play it, I experience some pain in my left wrist and hand, which can last for days afterwards. The bass has a 9" radius fingerboard. The pain is particularly acute when I'm playing in 1st position - down at the first 4 frets. I have a Metro MV4-HPJ that doesn't cause any discomfort (12" radius, I believe) and a number of other skinny-necked basses with radii between 12" and 10" that also don't cause me any pain.

Could it be the fingerboard radius that's causing the problem? Or is this all in my head? Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Man, that sux! I don't think that this is something in your head and can lead to further problems down the road.

I had a Fodera Imperial 6 with a 36" scale that I really had to stretch out my hand and wrist to play. Otherwise it would cause havok and pain. I found with that bass I had to almost play it like an upright. Kinda like the way Anthony Jackson plays.

I also seem to notice this when I had my first 5 string bass which was a Fender Roscoe Beck but that bass had what seemed like a huge neck.

This is not something that you can ignore. I would make sure that you stretch and warm up your hand and wrist before playing the bass. And try several neck positions to see if that changes anything.

Funny you mention. I normally wear my bass so that the top edge sits at belt level. At last Saturday's gig I raised the strap a couple of inches just out of curiosity, and by the end of the 2nd set I had pain in my left hand.

Now... my experience has nothing to do with fingerboard radius, but the point is that I can see how playing something outside of your normal comfort zone could require adjustment. I wound up lowering my strap, but fully believe that I could adjust to the shorter strap length. Likewise, you should be able to adjust to the smaller fingerboard radius... just give yourself some time. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. It is a beautiful bass - and at 7.7 lbs it's incredibly light. I'm trying to ease into playing it, in hopes that that will help. It just seems strange and unlikely that a slightly rounder fingerboard would make any difference, especially at the nut.

Trying different playing positions is a good suggestion. I'll try that.
