Agreed, if you qualify it as you did, "considering" or "getting on your personal radar", but his comments seemed like he skipped that and went directly to "selection". Otherwise, I wouldn't have said a word.

go and try a music man stingray 5. the necks and the width are similar. not dead on, cause the sadowsky feels faster and sleeker, but puts you in the ball park.

No offense taken-I think you guys get what I was getting at. Yeah, it sounds a bit warped. Seeing those guys play them in that style, hearing recordings with that model of bass on it within that style, talking to guys that play them in that specific style of music, and then doing additional research were key for me.
I liken this to other styles of music and their associated basses. If you want a bass to have THE Motown vibe (Jamerson, Babbit, et al), are you going to be playing something with humbuckers and rounds? No way, you're going to end up with a passive P-bass with the oldest flats that you can get your hands on. If you're going to play fusion, there's a good shot that you'll end up with some type of jazz (fretted or fretless...probably fretless) with rounds while favoring the bridge pickup. We could do this same thing with amps or strings.

Newsted has several Sadowskys, yeah. Read somewhere that the pickup location was based on his picking style.
I prefer to have the neck/soapbar pickup (thumb rest) closer to the fingerboard, compared to that of the standard location on the Modern model.

Please excuse the crappy phone cam pix, but the fraternal twins arrived here @work today! Thanks to Roger, Kevin, and the crew for making me a very happy man. I probably won't get to plug them in until tomorrow, but the acoustic tone on each is absolutely marvelous: "Red" is strung with flats and sings beautifully; "Whitey" (blue label strings) has a ferocious resonant growl.
I'm not sure how I'll photograph Whitey, even with my other camera. To paraphrase Nigel Tufnel: "It's like, how much more white could this be? and the answer is none. None more white."
