Club Sadowsky!!!

Thanks Pat. Actually it's ash but SpectorDetector's photo's show a beauty alder bod. I couldn't believe my luck when Kevin sent me a pic of it as being good to go (in stock).

You & me both Mike! I guess our builds are considered blood, having been created along side. I have noticed that the burst shading & colour on both of ours is matched pretty closely. I wonder if they were sprayed the same day :D Somebody SMACK me! :)
B.

Your right the burst is very close. Pretty exciting times right now for me and you.

I *love* my Sadowskys!
Superb playability, and dang if they don't sound just great!

I tend to run mine all flat, and the vtc at about 60% or so.
I do have fresh Blue Steels on both; and I really like the Sadowksy strings as well!

Sadowsky>Mesa M9>Epi UL410....fat, clear, meaty, and can go from vintage to nasty just with hand position, and a little tweak of the VTC.
Super easy to use that way.

These are great, great tools.
Roger and crew: thanks, thanks, thanks!!!!!

Two beautiful Classy Basses there. I love the table with the bass horizontal. You have taken some good pics in that room. Do you boost anything on the M9 or is it set flat also?

Hound-master:

I run the M9 on voice 2.
Input gain at noon, master at 9 oclock (man, that amp has *sick* headroom!)
Bass and treble at 10 oclock, mid at 2 oclock.
GEQ on, the 30hz band trimmed down a few clicks, and 2 and 5 khz up a tad, and the highest one trimmed a tad.
Compressor at 9 oclock, ratio straight up.

Sorry for the OT, just curious. Does that sound much different from the voice 'flat' and the EQ flattened out, other than graphic. I felt the bass boost, mid cut and treble boost built into the 'scoop' voicing settings was pretty close to the EQ points of the tone knobs.

No big deal, just curious... might make it a bit easier to tweak.

I get the observation you make, which seems to be "well, you've eq'd your way back to the flat setting, eh? So why not just use 3?"....but, it doesn't feel the same to me, it still feels brighter and more livelier to me than 3, which really feels "kinda flat," and I don't mean from an eq perspective...I mean like "not so alive."

Cool... probably a bit different on the Q's etc. Cool. That head just HAMMERS.

Gigged my older NYC plain jane JJ5 with SC's last night. Wow. TB'er B.C. can back me up on this but it was just KILLER. The B string is just SO satisfying on that bass... focused, punchy, big and full, and the D and G just step right up to the plate. Just continues to blow my mind how awesome that bass sounds.

I don't know why you call that 'plain Jane'. That, IMO is the best looking bass you own, and totally appropriate to the J bass theme. Definitely the sharpest looking Sadowsky you own IMO. That's a player's bass, not a 'collectors' bass! Remember, those wood tops and wood knobs have no impact on the tone!

Yeah, clearly I'm only speaking aesthetics regarding fancy schmancy stuff, and especially on a Sadowsky, I don't think the top really matters much, but I do think the chambering does, so it's a very different beast from my newer NYC with the chambers and top. I actually very much dig both, but no doubt about it, you're 100% correct, there's nothing plain jane about the tone!!

+1 That's just a great spec, and with my A-C ash/maple, is pretty much all I play (and have played for a number of years now). Most of the rest has gone out the door.

The chambering is always a difficult thing to interpret for me. My view of that is it is pretty much just a weight thing, versus those little holes cut in the wood having a significant impact on tone. I had a VERY light ash/maple metro (for about a day.. hated it), and it had that same airy type of tone with that bit of looser low end that some of the very light NYC's have to my ear.

However, moot point there... they all sound good. I'm with you though, and would always spec a non chambered NYC in general, putting the bass just a touch to the heavy side of Roger's weight range spec.

Chef,

Do both basses have single coil Sadowskys and are any of these chambered bodies.

If single coil pups what makes you prefer these over the HC?

Thanks.

Both are Metro solid bodies, both are single coil.
The RV5 (sunburst) came with the HC's, and to me, they're too mid-scooped and polite.
Lotsa folks like them, but I prefer the more aggressive punch and grind of the single coils.

sure thing!

The HC's are the thing if you want wider frequency response, lower lows, and higher highs; and have a sound that might be considered more typical for gospel, funk, modern smooth jazz and such, speaking in very general terms. Of course people use them for much more than that.

The SC's are more focused, and don't seem to go quite as high or low; but have a more focused mid punch that works better for me in my classic rock, blues etc.

Pretty personal choice...

Is the Metro truss rod (as viewed from the bridge) clockwise= straighten and counter clockwise= relief? All my truss rods have been at the headstock or came with clear instructions. Thanks
Yes, they're always normal threads, and you always tighten to flatten and loosen to add relief. Just one tip... if you're tightening, either loosen the strings first or defeat string tension by bracing the neck in the middle and pulling back on the headstock. Just enough to see the strings move a little.
