hey does anybody know what the nordys fat singles sound like in a 24 fret sadowsky

I've been looking, but I haven't found it again (yet). But there was a blue stained quilt topped 4 banger that Will Lee used that Roger was selling a few years back.
I was in LOVE with that one.

Anyone seen it before?

I can't believe that I missed seeing that one. Sounds very cool.

He and I share an affection for the coffee table top stuff. I like anything quilt maple. He likes the buckeye tops.

When it comes to the coffee table stuff I think cocobolo is right up there. Some has pretty intense red in it.

WOW!!!! I gotta admit.... This thing is almost identical sounding the one Hounddog now has... It doesn't have the exact warmth as the morado board, but I can dial that in with a decrease of the VTC or a slight boost of the bass. So, I am not sure how much difference I will hear with the SC's in this bass. It already sounds killer

Now, sadly... I cannot remember how I ran my other UV (eq wise). So, this one I am running VTC about 75%, bass about 30% and treble about 35-40%... I think I copied Chef's settings last time and it was perfect.

The good news is that I have a gig tomorrow night that we run a board mix so I will be able to gauge somewhat my sound from that. The other good thing about tomorrow is that I get to funk this thing till it bleeds! Hahahaha.

By the way, I have barely put this thing down tonight and did so only to put my boys to sleep. Roger, you and your crew are absolutely amazing! I also have to give big props to eddo8862 for doing the trade deal to get me a UV70 back in my hands. He is a cool cat and he just placed another order for a Sadowsky 24 fret. Thanks Ed!!!

Actually, he is very interested in picking up bass. He's a great kid. I'd probably let him practice in the house on any of my stuff, but there's no question that he's getting a MIM Fender for any trips outside the house.

I used to have them in my Modern and (for my sound ideal) I preferred them to the Sad soapbars.
They have a more traditional fat bite and are way less clean than the stock PUs.

In the end i sold the bass because of the PU position.

BUT, I literally finalized my order yesterday for a new Sad 5 string with BS, but this time in 60's J position

Not my intention to open a can of worms, but is there any consensus (yeah, I know....) when it comes to HC vs SC?

I would guess some of you have a preference, and I would like to hear which one you prefer and why.

No consensus, pure personal taste. The vast majority of Sadowsky basses have the HC's in them (Roger's stock pickup for Metro's, and the pickup you will get with the NYC J's if you don't specify singles), and they sound great.

There is a meaningful tonal difference to my ear, with the HC's being (like most HC's) a bit more open, deeper in the absolute low end, a bit more polite in the mids, and very crystal clear in the upper treble. The SC's are a bit tighter, a bit punchier, and move the treble response down a bit for more 'grind' than 'sizzle'.

I prefer the singles, but gigged the HC's for a couple of years in my alder/RW NYC Vintage with no issues. I currently like the bit more of a punchy grind I get with the SC's in my ash/maple Sadowsky than the cleaner, more modern sound (to my ear) of the HC's, but again, not better or worse at all.

I completely see your POV on the tonal differences. I have a skewed image since my other UV70 was ash/morado so I think I was trying to mentally compensate for the ash/ash combo I have now.

What was it about the pickup position(s) that bothered you? Don't mean to cause any stir, just asking because I'm about to order a Modern 5 with a custom neck pickup location.

I'll jump in since I felt the same way. There is obviously nothing wrong with the Moderns, but they have a very strong voice (in the tone universe of the Ken Smith and Cirrus basses) due to those big humbuckers positioned close to the bridge. So, lots of space between the notes, lots of low mid bap, bap, bap, and a VERY modern top end (at least with the stock Seymour/Sadowsky pickups).

Interesting basses... very 'Mark King' type slap tone, very burpy and round and low mid punchy with both pickups dimed, and strangely enough, a VERY good P Bass tone when you solo the neck pickup.

Great basses if that is the tone profile (kind of like a fatter, less pingy Ken Smith to my ear) you dig.

If you get one of the 24 fret Sadowsky's with the Seymours in the J positions, it will sound like a J bass with humbuckers... wider, deeper, more absolute low end versus that round low mid push.

It's a funny world. All the things described is exactly why I LOVE the modern.

Also, I agree that the bass will sound like J if you alter the PU position. In fact, if you go with the J positions and big singles, it will sound pretty much just like a jazz bass. It would even really be a vintage tone with a "modern" look. But, you do get the 24 frets.
