IIRC, Roger himself has said that his 1/4" tops make no significant tonal contribution. He may have said this before he began chambering bodies, but I would still doubt that it makes a difference.... chambered is not the same as hollow or semi-hollow.

I agree with Roger that fretboard material is far from nuance. However, a solid top is pure aesthetics IMO and much IME there.

The bass is out for delivery as I type this. I will for sure post my thoughts on the HC's vs the SC's... but I think the fretboard will also come into play. Even though both basses have ash bodies, my old UV70 is Morado and this is maple... I have a feeling it might actually balance out.

I plan to post some clips tonight as well.

Will almost always goes for maple boards, however one of his WL Sadowskys has a rosewood board of some kind.... perhaps someone from the shop can clarify.

While I too always assumed he preferred maple boards, both of the Will Lee models that Will has selected for himself have morado boards.

I had asked Will about this in my interview, and he seemed to be quite happy with both maple and morado, and said that he did not have a strong preference.

Morado does not sound like maple. It is brighter and tighter than east indian rosewood but it is still significantly sweeter and warmer than maple or ebony.

Of course, not exactly, but MUCH closer to the quick, bright attack of maple than the warmer, sweet top end of one of the real rosewoods to me. It of course has nothing in common with Ebony to my ear.

Nice choice for those who want it a little more brite (bright... whatever!) in the upper mids, but don't like the look of maple and, to your point, don't want to go for that all out upper mid brightness.

+1 though.. kind of sits in between maple and rosewood regarding feel and tone, with ebony off in its own thing to my ear. Great choice for those who like the look of Rosewood, but want a bit more of that maple thing IMO and IME.
