I had an alder series 1 VM4 that weighed 9lbs 1 oz (4.14kg) and now have an alder series 2 VS4 that weighs 7.5lbs (3.4kg).
The body is considerably downsized on the series 2 and mine is at the lighter end of the variation if you look at the typical V series weights on the Bass Direct website.
8.5 lbs would be a fairly heavy series 2 VM though.

Excuse me I don't know if you have already talked about it, but I noticed that in some models the writing german quality appears on the back of the headstock and in others made in germany .. what are the differences?

Hmmm...to me it's that made in Germany is not equal to German quality? LOL just joking.
I thought there was some difference .. german quality makes me think it can be done anywhere with german quality

I have two California II's ...one is VM4 and the other VT4, the first is ash and the latter is alder, this one is lighter than the other.the VM is matte finish and the VT is hardcore aged finish.
The VT4 from 2018 says German Quality, and the VM4 with is quite new says Made in Germany.

Is there an easy way to date a Sandberg? I just bought a Basic 4 second hand, for silly cheap, and was wondering how old it is. It almost looks new but there are a few small details which strongly suggest it isn't.
If I turn the volume above 50% it overloads whatever it is plugged into. Insanely hot output. Is this normal?

Build quality is superb and the matt blackburst finish over the ash body is lovely.

@CurtHagenlocher Thanks for that. I hadn't found that page. Mine is 2016 so not all that old.
So here's mine
When I got it I was very dissapointed in its playability. The action was very high everywhere and first position was unplayable. So a string change and setup were in order but when I tried to remove the strings I discovered that they were jammed into the nut slots. They were not sitting on the zero fret either, hence the unplayability. On close inspection it looks like the nut was relaced.
I filed the nut wider and deeper and the strings now sit on the zero fret properly. Some flats and a twitch of the TR and it plays beautifully.
It is in great condition other than the nut and the finish on the ash body is really nice. Much better than a plain old gloss finish IMHO. The German quality does shine through, it's like a BMW of basses.
I would be happy if I'd bought this new and paid full price, seems worth every penny of the original asking price. The only thing I'd change is blueburst instead of black and I might have eschewed the fretboard dot markers and begged them to not fit a pickguard. I'd like it better without the holes.
The only "issue" I have with it now is the extremely high output. It isn't a big issue as it works just great with the volume down but it is a bit weird that it is so much hotter than any other bass I've tried and I have a few other active basses. It is just as hot in passive as it is in active mode. I'd feel a bit reassured if someone could confirm this is normal for these basses.

Try contacting Sandberg and see if they can send you a new nut, then take to trusted technician/luthier to replace it.
For the hot output, since you seem to have brought the action down, you may need to adjust the pickup height. I had to do that once because the P pickup in my VM4 was too close and it was clipping. Again, you may ask Sandberg how far they normally keep that MM pickup from the strings in that particular model.

It was much the same when I got it. Anything over about 60% on the volume control causes clipping in whatever it is plugged into. Sounds just fine with volume >=60%. I will check the pickup heights, it will probably help a little.

Funny thing that I’ve already sold this VS5. Even after replacing the pickup I was struggling with lack of low end in passive mode, so I decided to part with it. My California TT5 covers all my needs and has this passive jazz bass tone in spades.
Annoying buzzing resonance on D string 12th fret harmonic

I have recently bought a couple of Sandbergs, a used VT4 and a new one VM4.
This VM4 has this annoying buzzing resonance when 12th fret harmonic D string is plucked, this is driving me nuts and I might be returning it to the dealer as haven't found the source of the problem, I have checked all sorts of things ... all imaginable spots, screws, strings, saddles, tuning posts ... I mean .. you name it. I even took it to a Luthier just to inspect it, but we haven't found the cause of it.
... any thoughts on this ?
