Sandberg every time.

Sandberg are the basses that Fender should be if they took as much care and attention.
For a ‘mass produced’ bass it’s as close to a luthiered bass as you will get.

The only thing in a Fender line i would choose above a sandberg is the Dusty Hill sig bass, and if Sandberg made a 51-54 type P bass then I would choose that one instead

@APGP so essentially you could say a jazz for example is a jazz.......but the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail of the bass is second to non. The quality of materials/wood is fantastic as well, and if you like an aged finish no one does it better in the business.

The Delano pick ups they use are fantastic, slightly more hifi, the in house sandberg pick ups are also great, more vintage, slightly less output, the Hauessel pick ups the often use have more mid range and output and the pre amp is great.

Basses are a personal thing, what I will say is you could never hate a Sandberg, and there is a very good chance you will love it

Sandberg produce 1200-1400 a year at full capacity. I’m not sure you can even categorise Sandberg as Mass-Produced. Not producing 23-26 Basses a week.

Keisel are custom builders and complete/ship 20 per day. 100 a week. I wouldn’t even consider them mass produced.

I prefer Sandbergs because of their consistent quality, playability and sound. To me, notes are more even all over the fretboard and I'm yet to try one with a discernible dead spot. The California II's are generally lightweight and you can choose from many options or find "one off the peg" if you can't wait.
I've owned many Fenders over the years and although I feel comfortable with the shape etc. Sandbergs have that familiarity but added quality and value for money.

Ok, i can always change the pick ups later if i dislike them. I've seen some TT4's online coming with sandbergs and others with delanos, I think it's the active/passive ones that carry the delanos. Thank you for the information ☺

This is all good to know. I’ve been waiting since September to get mine. Ordered it custom thru Chicago Music exchange. My only gripe is the lack of communication. I don’t blame the dealer as much as Sandberg. It seems it’s hard to get firm answers on a build?? I was told it would be ready this month, but here we are with one week left. Haven’t heard a thing.

I’ve never played one, but I custom designed one on a whim in the configurator. The pictures of these basses say a lot in comparison to fenders alone and although I love my ‘72 Jazz I think this Berg is going to blow it away.

Does anyone here know if it may be possible to have them make a custom bass in a shorter scale? There isnt any options for scale shorter the 34" on their configurator. Having the option of a 30" neck is a big comfort thing for me.

Ive emailed them twice about this and have yet to receive any response.

I am not surprised about that!

You have to keep in mind that Sandberg isn' t a huge outfit,
with hundreds of non qualified (and underpayed) assembly line workers,
that can easily be replaced!

It' s a traditional workshop with highly qualified staff.
When somebody is ill or can' t work for other reasons,
they rather let you wait a day or a week longer for your bass,
instead of doing expensive extra hours. (overtime is payed at least 25% more)

Waiting $***s!

But you can believe me!
When you have your :: in your hands,
you will know that it was worth the wait!

The wait will be worth it. Usually it’s 9-12 months + on average and Masterpieces 18 months. The waiting time of 9-months is only an estimate but you are in a queue!

Quality takes time.

It’s a California TM 4-stringer...bunch of cool options like matching headstock, maple fretboard, black block inlays...

Cool to see some videos on the factory. I like that it’s a small operation with attention to detail. I’m all about that.
