Club Sandberg ?

Have been looking at Sandberg basses for a while, but they seem hard to locate and try in the UK especially in the SW. The main agent Synergy Distribution doesn't even bother to answer emails regarding basic things like width of neck at the nut 4 & 5 string - string spacing for both. I would at least have lioked to compare these things to my existing basses.

Guess I will stay with my Musicman collection and add a Fender USA Deluxe.

Try Guitarguitar.co.uk. They have Sandbergs (and some other lovely stuff!)

There's loads of other options here: Invalid Link Removed

I ordered a new one via a dealer in the Netherlands today. Can't wait! (Tt5, Swamp ash, Natural Gloss, Maple fretboard... Lovely)

Cheers

... regarding basic things like width of neck at the nut 4 & 5 string - string spacing for both. ...

That prompted me to go looking for the specs for string spacing at the bridge (for 5 strings in particular) ... surprised that all I can find out is that they're less than 19mm ... a surprise to me ... I thought that's exactly what they were.

Anyone know the string spacing at the bridge for a PM5 ?

Andy

Sandberg 5 String with new bridge, the adjustable spacing is between 18 and 19.5 mm.

In this review they stated it: (in the end) Invalid Link Removed
The VM5 has the same bridge as the Panther, as do all other Sandberg 5-String models.
If it's wrong please somebody correct it.

Regards

Like wawawawa said, try guitar guitar.

i ordered my custom cali PM5 through them and it was quick and easy especially since the music messe was on when i ordered it :bassist:

Hi pjstingray. I can't help with the 5 string dimensions but my California JJ4 and JM4 have a standard jazz width neck (1.5" at the nut). My slightly older PM4 measures a couple of mm more (slightly less than a 70's Precision width). The Basics I've tried have all had the Jazz width neck if I recall correctly.

As an ex MusicMan owner I recommend that you try a Sandberg if at all possible !

Hey thanks for the info. I would always keep my Musicman basses so, do you think the the JJ or the JM would give me a better contrast of sounds?

I find that the MM p/up on my Basic PM4 sounds more like a beefed up J p/up than a Ray or Sterling p/up (I have a SUB and Ray34 for comparison) which is down to the positioning of this p/up closer to the bridge than on a MusicMan bass. So will a JJ of JMM give you a 'better' contrast of sounds? Well it will certainly give you contrasting tones and more of them, but better is a subjective term.

When I bought my "Frog" -- the Sandberg Basic 4 -- last Autumn, I instantly wanted to make a recording where my Froggy could show up its wonderful tone. The choice was the Nancy Sinatra's song "These Boots Are Made for Walking". My wife Sheila Sheen asked to write the Polish lyrics for the song said something like "Eh, Nancy could have used her boots for trampling the guy but we live in the 21st century, so I would drive such guy down myself" ;)

This car is made for driving, and that's what I'll just do
one of these days I'll drive this car all over you.
;)

I've concentrated on the rhythm section here, recording the Sandberg directly via the instrument input of my TASCAM US-2000 and giving it only minimal processing.
But I also needed some good guitar to flavour the stuff and also a good vocalist. A 19-yo Wroclaw guitarist styling himself as Mystovski delivered 3 good guitar tracks over the Internet in half an hour. Later, I went to his city Wroclaw where we had a recording session with the female vocalist Flower.

I hope to have some business related trips to Wroclaw in May, then we could further improve the audio and make some nice movie ;-)

Enjoy Sandberg tone!

As I posted earlier:
Nut: 45 mm
String spacing is done with equal distrances between the edges of the string, at least on my bass. I don't feel the difference, but if you measure from iddle of B to E the distance is greater than from middle of D to G.

The "MM" pick up on the PM (VM or whatever) does not sound like a Musicman pick up at all! I play mostly Sandberg JM5, Musicman Bongo 5's and a Stingray 5, and they are each very different.

Just to add to the general discussions and observations about Sandberg equipment.

I spend a fun hour or so at a bass specialist recently and played some really, really nice equipment (all through a great sounding Glockenlang Amp - I think it was the "Soul")

1 - Sadowsky MV-5, Natural gloss, Maple fretboard (2600 Euros (!!)) (Yes, that's $3,800 for a Metro)
Lovely bass. Great feel. Impressed with the tonal range and general tightness of it. Huge volume change when switching from passive to active and back.

2 - Fender Marcus Miller 5 string (Not sure of the price but approx 2200 Euros = $3,250)
Again nice. Great tone. Absolutely hated the pickup cover though... Completely in the way!

3 - Lakland Skyline Joe Osborn (1300 Euros = $1900)
Meh. Not wildly impressed. I know it's Passive only but I wasn't blown away at all. It looked great (3 tone SB with a Maple neck)

4 - Fender Am Std Precision Five (1600 Euros approx = $2375)
I liked this one a lot. Nice neck, good build quality. Limited sound options but hey, it's a P-bass and sounded great.

5 - Sandberg Tm5, Rosewood neck (1300 Euros = $1900)
Smooth, quick neck. Great "B" string. It was super tight, the tonal options were really great, there was almost no volume change between passive and active (how do they do that?) and the build quality felt top-notch.

Of all of them I think the Sadowsky was the nicest (it was a really beautiful instrument to look at and had great tone) with the Sandberg a very, very close second (and the P bass in third). Considering you could almost buy 2 Sandbergs for one Sadowsky I think the choice is easy. Also, I don't think I'd want to gig with a Sadowsky as it's just too valuable to take out of the house and it might set unrealistic expectations of my playing skills to any bass players in the audience! ;)

This is why I went ahead and ordered a Tt5 a couple of days later (and I plan to get a 4 string P bass also with the money saved from not getting the Sadowsky... Mwa ha ha)

To anyone who is thinking about a Sandberg, you have to try one. You will be impressed I am sure.

If you live in Europe, you really have no excuses at all! ;)

I think the quality is clearly up there and the value is just great. My Tt5 - built to my exact specs - will be cheaper for me than Am Std P-bass 5er and about the same as an Am Std Fender Jazz 5.

I can only see them becoming more and more popular and widespread.

Cheers all

I tried a couple of Sandbergs Tm's yesterday ,nice Basses ,well built ,Delanos top ,very versatile but neck dive worse than a FJB.
Sandberg should address this problem because for many it is a deal breaker .

Does FJB mean Fender Jazz Bass? If so, I fail to see your point at all. I have owned a lot of Jazzes and none of them had ANY neck dive at all. Neither does my Sandberg.

But hey, you could probably have them put a strap button on the backside of the headstock, that'd definitely cure any feeling of neck dive;)

So what point do you fail to see ?
I'm relating my experience with 2 Sandberg Tm's that I played in a store and I'm saying that this is an issue with the TM's that should be corrected because S'berg seem to be intent on selling an overall quality instrument and this is to most, an irksome characteristic .
I also own a '95 Fender Jazz Bass which I really like but it suffers from neck dive also but not as bad as a Tm .I was sitting while playing ,let go of the neck and crashed really quickly ,massively heavy h'stock!
Are you telling me that I'm the only person in the world who has experienced this both with S'berg AND Fender. It is also not A FEELING ,it is an attribute of the friggin bass.
IF you have a S'berg TM stock model and it does'nt dive then bully for you, my experience is not the same .
An experienced player would not buy a Bass with neck dive ,would he ? That's one of my points .
I'm not trollin' . Think before you spout.

@Klonk

Yeah Really !!!
