I too have ran active and passive through it. My active pups are hot and seem to take away some of the subtle character that gives the MS that tube depth in the tone. Basically, I feel the active pups from my bass push to hard into the tubes and I get break up, but not the natural smooth break up typical of tube tone we all want.

My passive on the other hand, sounds orgasmicly amazing.

Currently using two passive basses for my two bands, a Geddy Lee Jazz with Model J's for one, and a Ric for the other.

I use the Jazz on the boost channel and the Ric on the clean channel, which lets me keep my settings separated for the two bands. Overall everything sounds just about perfect, but I might try some Area J pickups in the Jazz soon... the Model Js are just a bit too hot, as a few others describe above.

I have a big gig this weekend with both of my bands on the same bill. And I'll backline my rig for the other bands that night as well. Good chance to listen in from the crowd! I am thinking of bringing my Zoom H4n and recording some clips, and if any of them turn out I can try to figure out how to use sound cloud and share them with you guys.

Agreed. My 6 string has an 18v preamp. I never felt as though the MS was adding anything to that setup. You are spot on about the relationship/ tone of the passive bass and MS. I should pull the active/ passive pot on my 6'er and see how that sounds.

In other news, I just ordered an ACG EQ-02 preamp for my sidelined Fender Precision Lyte Deluxe.

It's the first bass I ever bought and it's super comfortable to play, but I've got a few better sounding options these days. Its been hanging on the wall as art for the last year because I couldn't stand the thought of selling it, but hopefully the new preamp will revive it and get it back in rotation.

Such a great live band. Saw them last November. Cory's bass and MS tone sounded so strong and present in the mix.

Buy the poster and meet them after the show. They hung out with us for a while after their set. But I saw them in a small venue, so if it's a large show they might not hang out as long.

So we had a great jam last night and for the very first time in years, my bass sounded almost exactly the way I wanted it too. I looked through the TB classifieds this morning as I usually do and found myself wanting very little. It's a nice feeling!

Geddy Lee jazz bass with Dimarzio Model Js, Meatsmoke Pre on the boost channel, Crown XLS1500, fEarful 15/6, and a light sprinkling of Fuzzrocious OSD as required.
