What, in your opinion should Warmoth do to make this better?

Well, After much deliberation(and a summer Job as a Furniture delivery guy), I can finally build my own jazz like I want to my specifications. Here are the specs as of now:


Mahogany Sherwood green Jazz body-standard routes
Maple/Maple Black Blocked and bound jazz neck
Audere pre- the vol/vol one (forgot actual name)
black clover hipshot ultra light tuners
Black Kahler tremolo
black pickguard
all black hardware-screws, neckplate...etc.
black schaller straplocks

now to my current problem: I cant decide on Pickups, I want this to be a slap bass as that is what i generally play, I love Les' and Tim Commerford's Jazz tones.


so can anyone recommend good slap pickups?

pictures to come, Neck has arrived, Kahler shoud be here today/tomorrow....body is still 2 months off at least.

Any decent passive pickup will work great, especially if you're dropping in an Audere. I have the 62 Reissues on my 98 MIA Jazz and my parts P copy and they're great. The current Original and CS Fender pickups are also great and pretty cost-effective.

I know this sounds like sacrilege to some, but I really don't hear a lot of differences in similarly made pickups that can't be accomplished with EQ, so I say get the cheapest set that's good. My SX P copy has a pickup that came with it that's every bit as good as any Fender pickup I have. I wouldn't put SX pickups on a cherry hi-quality parts bass, but it goes to show you that you don't need to spend a lot on pickups.

I have Quarter Pounders on my Jazz... they're an improvement from the MIM pickups I had but I don't really like they're tone all that much. They sound fairly scooped on the mids, which is not exactly something you want on a bass. I would consider DiMarzio Model J pickups or Nordstrand NJ4/NJ4SV pickups. The Nord SV pickups are split-coil so they will eliminate the hum that you usually get with single coils. If you do a good job shielding the bass you won't get that much hum from single coils anyway.

A few things for ya:

*Sherwood green is actually a LOT darker than what you've got pictured there. Still a really neat color but it's more of a "hunter green" or "forest green" if you remember those crayons.

*Please put a tort pickguard on it! LOL that's just a personal preference for me but is my favorite color combination besides natural and black.

*pickups - EMG's if you want a modern tone, and Duncans if you want a more vintage tone. (claypool is noted for using EMG's)

thats the pic that Warmoth uses for it Sherwood, but even if it is alot darker Ill probably like it.

but does Claypool use EMGs in his Jazz bass?, I think i can see pole pieces on it.

Just put a set of Q-pounders in an old Peavey bass ... they are a middle ground pickup right between the stock Fender pickup which has a more pronounced midrange peak to my ears, and the big Dark Stars which have huge "girth" and more of everything top and bottom.

If you want a traditional Fender sound but no hum try the Nordstrand or Dimarzio Ultra Js (I like them both)

Quarters if you want more output and a clean balanced sound.

Dark Stars ... for more of everything!

;) ... As you can see the Dark Stars require routing, but this is a ground up build right?

NKUsigEP, I emailed Warmoth about the color (because after you said that about the color I began realizing that Sherwood indeed is much darker)
But I got my email back a few minutes ago and one of the Customer Service people went to check with a body that is painted in Sherwood Green and he says they look exactly the same, lol, so thats alot of stress off my mind

thanks for the warning though

:update:

I have been on this computer now for 3 hours trying to order a Audere preamp and 4 Hipshot ultralite black tuners for my warmoth jazz bass..


first Audere says i need a paypal account.....i dont have one.... I go to get one....that takes 2 hours.......get back to audere, turns out i dont need a account after all(good thing too, it wouldnt let me have one)......try to order with my credit card(no word has been said about paypal),then I get a email saying theyre gonna wait till my paypal account verifies the money.....i never could even get a paypal account in the first place.....and they said i didnt need one!!!!!



try to order the tuners and a string retainer.......says i dont need a paypal account right at the start...thats a good sign right?.....bad news....cant read where to put in the credit card information because it wont fully load, so I guess.....then click submit......IT TAKES ME TO THE PAYPAL WEBSITE and says 'invaild data'


is it really this hard to get stuff for everyone else?!
