Coloured Strings. Yay or Nay?

I agree with using them on certain basses and up until now, I haven't found one of mine that would fit that criteria. I am now working on a bass that is very much in the same theme as the beautiful P-bass that Basshappy posted earlier; the colored strings that will be on this bass play an integral part in the design.

I agree with the statement about black strings. I don't put them in class as the neon colored strings. I have used black tapewounds and I will most likely use them again.

In the late 60's I played in a band with a bass player who had a Vox Cougar bass. It was a thin hollowbody roughly the shape of a Gibson 335. It had strings wrapped full length with dark green "silk". I thought it looked pretty cool. Since this bass player was only required to make dull thumping sounds at regular intervals, we thought the tone was OK. I was told the strings were original with the instrument. Anybody else know what they might have been?

I think I remember hearing that silk-wrapped strings were available, when I was first getting started, but I don't think I ever played or even saw them.

24k gold-coated strings on a gold-leaf finished bass work well

I had purple strings from Aurora strings on a vm 70s jazz bass V.

I got more compliements about the string colour than my crappy playing.

I eventually sold the bass to the band leader of a "sweet home alabama" tribute band.

The bass player still uses the bass with the same purple strings to this day

Black strings on an Aerodyne look nice. Back when I was a senior in high school I put black ones on the school's sunburst Jazz, with "meh" results. The only time I've actively tried to color-coordinate was years ago when I put DM Blue Steels on my RB-800, and that was just because the turquoise silk matched the bass. Since then I've mostly used plain old Rotosounds.

I think these look just okay, being that I don't play this bass too often and these wrapped strings feel a bit too large I'll probably ditch them when I make some wiring changes in the near future. I'm not a big fan of brightly colored strings, they just look too busy and detract from the overall look of a bass....but as you can see I play some ugly basses so....IMO only of course.

That bass looks so punk rock

I use DR strings I like them there medium gauge but they sound fine. I have used black red and green no difference and the coating dose.t come of quick. I always used GHS Boomers in a heavy gauge I love those also. I want to try Rotosounds. Of course I used Fender and Ernie Balls and Iike them. The only strings i wasn't to fond of were De Bella Flats and you don't get the sustain but other then that they were fine. Strings are not really on the top of my list as far as play ability
