Combo/Amp suggestions

i've only been playing bass for a few years now...and i only have ever owned one amp. a 2x15 Traynor that's managed to survive through the 80's.

i'm looking for something newer...with some pretty tone, a good distortion (partial to that, since i play in a metal band....plug in effects work for me) and...anything else that might help >.<

i've been reading forums and reviews for 2 weeks and i'm still going over things until i can play a few of these myself. any help would be greatly appreciated.

your post header sounds like maybe your asking about combo's, but then you refer to using a 2x15 in a metal band. So are you really asking about amp combinations then ?

You did kind of give some tone objectives (dirty and metal), it would also help a great deal if you gave some financial objectives, like not wanting to spend over X $$'s.

If you have really been reading posts here for 2 weeks you should know that there are dozens of possibilities. New or Used, SS vs Tube vs Hybrid, portable rigs vs monster stacks, "hi-fi" vs "old-school" (I hate those terms myself, and I suppose a metal player would not want "hi-fi" ), cheap vs expensive, off the shelf vs boutique, combo vs separates. etc. etc. etc.

So, more details means better replies.

All that being said, Carvin, Peavey, Behringer, Hartke, Avatar and yes, Traynor ... all make solid, well made, reasonably priced, off the shelf rigs of various sizes and power outputs that would probably meet your needs.
