So Fender has released the Player 2 Series boasting some supposed upgrades to the Player Series along with new colors:

The "new" colors are far from being all that different from existing colors and the "improvements" are vague and not overtly different.

Hialeah Yellow looks quite different from anything I can recall seeing on an inexpensive production model. Like a new take on the buttercreme finish. I like it.

If you read closely, there is one "improvement." Exactly one: "slab rosewood or maple fingerboard with smooth rolled edges." The rolled fingerboard edges.

Is that enough to move the needle for buyers? We shall see.

I expect Fender to invent a new color of the spectrum, even if they have to invent special eyeglasses to see it, like Ben Franklin did back in the day.

I said it before, they should do a name change...Fender Humdrum Series.
The Coral with black pickguard looks good, but I can get a matching headstock with a less expensive Bacchus.
The Aquatone Blue isn't really much different than the MIJ Maui Blue.
Not to mention...Hialeah Yellow?
What were they he thinking with that...well, people loved Buttercream, so let's keep it the same ballpark?
Other than that, how exciting!

The real question is whether their QC will improve with this new series of basses. I honestly doubt it. I wouldn't be surprised if Squier passes them if they haven't done so already.

Seems like a good time to cop an OG Player Series. I had no issues with the one I owned sometime back. If the Fender site is selling these at $799 will merchants have them for less? I paid $700 +tax for a Player back in 2021.

I think the red and yellow are nice but the real stunner is the black on black jazz with the maple board. In terms of upgrades over the first series rosewood over pao ferro is a plus, and the boards have rolled edges. I was hoping that Fender would introduce a 5 string jazz in the Player ii series.

Every year there's a freak out thread about Fender discontinuing a P Bass or a Strat and every year a month later there's a hallelujah thread about Fender introducing the P Bass or Telecaster.

And every year about a month after that there's a thread of dismay that it's a P Bass, when someone realizes it hasn't changed.

Nothing new to see here. It's a great brand and they are great basses and they haven't changed in over half a century. They never completely discontinued maple or rosewood and they still have sunburst and it's a P bass. If you want another P Bass you should get one because they are the quintessential low end tool.

You build the same things over and over for some 70-odd years, well, even snowflakes run out of tiny variations to be This Year's Model for thousands of aspiring customers who for any number of reasons now think the Same Old Thing is now better than ever.

Except for the truly obsessed who will pay many multiples for a Custom Same Old Thing, or a vintage 50-year old OG Same Old Thing, or pay extra to buy a ratty looking brand new one that looks like the vintage 50-year old OG Same Old Thing.

It's an enigma to me: on one hand it's an absolute testament to the design genius of them, but somehow strange that guys must have the same axes their great-grandfathers played, or likely, it's two sides of that genius.
