Come On Fender!

I think the new series looks awesome - great colors and the rosewood looks fantastic. With the 48 month financing that you never see with Fender, I'm really going to have to restrain myself through July when the deal expires.

A 2nd hand Am Pro II fretless did it for me. I showed to a friend and he picked up a used one also. It's a great bass, but through body flats do the through body kink at the rollers, and the heavies installed (.110) weren't seated in the nut. So... i ordered Labella's flat solution for TB, the only gauge on that model is medium (.105) which should be fine.

Fender has five models in production right now: Precision Jazz, Mustang, Jaguar and Meteora. Models from MIA with many level of offering and also MIM that are more affordable. They also have a custom shop if you want something to your specs. If you want innovation or different flavours they offer those through Squier and Charvel (EVH also for guitars). That's a lot IMHO. Way more than Ernie Ball for example (and no one complains).

There's so much you can do on a Precision and a Jazz IMHO and there's thousand of aftermarket parts to mod or customized them. Your local luthier can also make it a one of a kind (or color match an headstock) for way less than custom shop.

I only have one FSO (Squier VM Jazz 5 because I wanted something affordable that's not in current production MIA/MIM) and it's enough for me. If I want something different I go elsewhere, lot of good companies aside from Fender.

Squier Paranomal is where it’s at! So much crazy cool coming out of that wacky laboratory. Basses are great, but if you like electric guitars it’s exponentially more interesting. Quality is top notch too.

Blame the honeymoon phase but I really dig my new Squier Sonic Precision bass. Jazz neck, P bass body & pickup. The perfect combination. I never liked P/J bases in order to get something similar. The Squier Sonic P is great and a featherweight.

P’s and J’s are classics that are hard to go wrong with, which is why people want them and buy them. For the same reasons, Fender can’t make any drastic changes to them either. Every time Fender does try to introduce something new and different, like the Dimension or Meteora, hardly anyone is interested, and they get discontinued eventually.

Of course Fender sticks to what their customers want - why shouldn’t they? The new models are perfectly fine, and a reasonable - if slightly uneventful - refresh of the Player line. And at least we’ll now be spared all the whining about Pau Ferro fretboards.
I agree with all this except I prefer pau ferro over rosewood. <ducks for cover> Especially on a fretless, rosewood is sort of a nonstarter if you play with roundwounds. See my earlier question about fretless J bass options in this new lineup.

As a founding member of the J neck P bass club, I wholeheartedly endorse a non-PJ stock option! I got the Sonic Bronco and it’s excellent.

I’ve never minded pau ferro, and when the CITES restrictions came into effect, I felt it was a sensible alternative. But OMG, did people go on about it! I’m happy Fender switched back to rosewood for that alone. 😊

The problem is that Fender used very light Pau Ferro. I've seen much darker PF boards that look very nice.

Luck of the draw, mine is pretty dark. Bad photo but you can see the color.
