Come On Fender!

If they roll the edges like Sire/Marcus Miller, then I'm in.
Instead of a V5R or V7?

Not everybody likes/wants matching headstocks. An FSO with matching headstocks is a no-go for me.
Enough want them that it's mentioned over and over again here, especially through the mod shop, which allows you to mod your bass the way you want to.
(Correction, the way Fender wants you to mod it )

If you read closely, there is one "improvement." Exactly one: "slab rosewood or maple fingerboard with smooth rolled edges." The rolled fingerboard edges.

Is that enough to move the needle for buyers? We shall see.

They rolled fingerboard on Classic Vibe Squiers from 2008 to date. And now they're bringing to Mexican models... just a effin' joke. Also Players still have bad trussrods and necks that go : S shape. nope, thanks.

Any word on whether there will be fretless versions of the Jazz with this new series?

I was considering a fretless in the Player (original) series for a while, then recently they went on mega-sale and now have completely disappeared. My guy at Sweetwater guessed that Fender was replacing the Player series with something new and he was right, but all I see in the Player II models so far are fretted basses.

P’s and J’s are classics that are hard to go wrong with, which is why people want them and buy them. For the same reasons, Fender can’t make any drastic changes to them either. Every time Fender does try to introduce something new and different, like the Dimension or Meteora, hardly anyone is interested, and they get discontinued eventually.

Of course Fender sticks to what their customers want - why shouldn’t they? The new models are perfectly fine, and a reasonable - if slightly uneventful - refresh of the Player line. And at least we’ll now be spared all the whining about Pau Ferro fretboards.
