Commenting on news stories online

... Much of the commentary online is nothing but a repetition of knee-jerk talking points.
This. Why bother? Out of 500 comments there will be 100 knee-jerk talking points from one "tribe", another 100 knee-jerk talking points from the other "tribe", and 150 each from the same two guys arguing back and forth.

"Wow, that's a great point. I never thought of that. I need to reconsider my position on this issue." Said no online commenter ever.

I read two newspapers every day, listen to NPR Morning Edition almost every day, and catch Denver area network and affiliate TV evening news every chance I get.

As a result, I often tell my 29 and 30-year-old daughters (who live in Denver, 60 miles south) about construction projects and local events there before they hear about them.

News from social media? Nope, I don't find much to trust in it.

And re-consider my position based on solid info from an authoritative source? Yes, I have done that.

Sometimes I wonder how many working hours are stolen from employers by people who troll the internet all day.
The numbers are probably astronomical!

One of my old classmates used to post on FB all day & then throw in there sometimes about how she was being worked to the bone.
Eventually she posted that she was let go, what a surprise :woot:

IMdB finally shut down their trollfest board.
Facebook is blocked where I work.

I comment on news stories & editorials all the time. I am hard-wired in my world view and regardless of another’s opinion, it isn’t going to change what I think when I post. Time and new revelations on the passing scene has changed my outlook at times but overall, if I post a comment, it’s probably contentious to someone. Bring it on.
