Compression in Monitors?

As a veteran singer, I would never recommend compressing the vocals in the monitor mix. If you find your singer has poor mic technique, fix that with on-mic practice. But it is very important that what comes out of the monitor is what is true. I personally would entertain a drop of reverb on the vocals, but even that can cloud what is really happening in a live situation.

Even if it didn't risk a person's vocal health, it seems like a complicated way to avoid kindly saying "please pay attention to how you're use a microphone".

Wow...had to go look at the manual on this one. In my case the insert is just before the EQ section. Further reading shows the insert "send" tap is pre-EQ and pre-fader. I use Aux's 1 & 2 for monitors (assigned as pre-fader) so I'll assume that the monitor channels will carry the compression.

I've seen several references over the years addressing the sub-group route as being the best option. This is, of course, with regards to my older Soundcraft analog board. The newer digital gear is a whole different animal!

Riis

Yeah, same with the digital console I use. Monitor sends are either post-fader, pre-fader, or pre-EQ, and the dynamics processor is before the EQ, so if I use a comp or gate it'll be in the monitors. Not a big deal for IEMs but I prefer to just leave off the gate/comp on channels going to wedges.

With digital though you can pretty easily patch the same input to multiple channels, send one to monitors and one to the house, and just leave the comp off the one going to the monitors.

I've made any point I intend to make. If you choose to NOT learn from another point of view, feel free.
I learn from others' POV all the time. I haven't learned a thing from yours, however. :D

But none of you have shown yourself qualified to define who IS and who ISN'T a "real" singer.

Neither have you. Bluster and machismo is all I have seen. BTW, why in the world did you name yourself anything with "mellow" in it?

I don't like effects in the monitors when I am on stage. To my ears it further obfuscates the stuff I need to hear in what is frequently already a difficult hearing environment. YMMV, and you are welcome to request it when you are on stage, and if the sound man elects to give it to you (as I have repeatedly said, I would if he were me), good for you. If he declines to do so and you threaten him with physical violence to get your way, I'm on his side.

i'm using the new mackie 1608 that runs off an ipad, and even though it's entirely digital, i've had to go old-school and split the XLR cables of our three vocals and give them each two channels, one comp'ed for out front and one uncomp'ed for wedges.

their upcoming 2.0 update will solve this, by allowing the aux outs to be set pre-compression.
