Double Bass Compressor Recommendations for Upright Bass

By cutting main resonances of the feedback loop that is pickup-amp-cab-room-top-bridge-(strings-bridge)-pickup, you can also cut natural resonances of the top. That might help with feedback, but can also change the natural sound of the instrument.

On the other hand reducing these non-bass-based resonances the sound might get a lot better than what cutting off a bass resonance can do harm to it.

So it needs some experience and ears to do it right.

I am growing ly interested in slight very clean compression (so far the Keeley seems best) partly as an enhanced flavor (think cream in coffee) to my Octal tube preamp (which widens and acouctic -izes and warms a piezo) but I am also curious about how it would effect (positively I hope) a blended piezo/mic sound. A mic (even a contact mic like the Ischell or Green Remic) can do the whole top end thing really well. Dialing in the piezo underneath (when just right), can be far from a piezo sound you might use by itself. Just curious about how that might work.

Good luck in your experiments, I'll be following along. In my particular experience, there isn't enough time in the day for me to try blending a microphone an piezo together again and I'm definitely a tinkerer. Just my take, good luck.

Well, for several weeks I have been taking the Felix on top of the V8 to the one gig I have left regularly, and after a while of only using 1 ch and having the Remic and Ischell and a host of other mics, I just slapped on the Ischell and really dug the blend. Yesterday I played it with the Y>V8 and it was just great sounding so I dont know how really interested I am...but I was reading this thread about compression and at that gig I was out in the sun and so I moved way the other side of the pianist to get some shade (maybe 12 feet from my amp) and the sound was really WAY more diffuse then what I hear standing over it WAY. Maybe the fattening of the tube pre also splashes the sound once you get out a few feet....I'm gunna see if any friends have the Keeley and if that is anyway an enhancement for me.

Somewhere on youtube I just watched a demo interview with Keeley about compression....the guitarist played dumb so that Keeley could really explain whats up and what you can do and what it will do for you.
Seems like it would be a really cool thing to kick in for playing solos especially if you like to play in a more modern across the bass fashion or thumb position. A little highlight, a little clarity, a little more even representation across the strings then you would want accompanying. But it also seems like a pedal like the Keeley bassist in its most transparent (for bass) compression might be a good thing for hearing yourself better thru an amp and projecting a coherent sonic picture to the audience. I dont know, there arent any videos of anybody using it with Upright. Chris...?

In Googling the subject I came across some articles on mixing. The articles included comments that you would not typically compress upright with traditional styles like jazz.

Yes this is correct, and you have to learn to strike a balance which varies with the amount of stage volume required to do the job. Remember we are concerned about how the mic, amp, and speaker are interacting in a feedback loop. As the gain and SPL is increased, it tends to exaggerate the instrument's natural resonances and throw them out of balance. In other words if you need to play louder, the resonances grows more severe and you must apply more corrective EQ to keep them in the proper balance.

IMHO, highly resonant instruments are generally not the best choice for amplification. As an example, the last upright I played professionally was very resonant and intended to be a cannon acoustically. I never could get it to sound great through an amp because the problem was occurring across clusters of adjacent frequencies rather than at just a few narrow-band hot spots.

IHMO there is no efficacy in making deep wideband cuts, as doing such will make the sound unnatural and hallow. But if the problem can be controlled with five or less notch filters, and some shallow broadband tone shaping, you can usually enhance the tone significantly.

Yeah the thing is there is great recorded upright tone and then there is trying to play a solo soulfully and melodically and relaxed in a noisy club with the drummer fluttering his brushes in a wash in one ear and the piano in the other and the audience thinking "bass solo, we can talk".(if we ever get back to audiences in clubs)
This may not be it for sure, How do I know? but it SEEMs like being able to do "audibly invisible" compression might focus your amp sound. The way I look at it is the Piezo is already a form of compression and so is the preamp it goes into, so however to get the best sound to make good music out of is worth trying to get at....
Yeah unless anyone wants to post a video of what it does on upright (or travel bass) my interest is pretty passive, but I'm curious.
 
To me it comes down to the same thing we face in a recording studio: What sounds good soloed often gets buried in a mix. It's the same reason I thought obligatos sounded amazing until i took them out onto the first - and last - gig. If we sit too close to the source and hear the sound we want the audience to hear, the audience automatically isn't going to hear that because they aren't sitting where we are. If we want the audience to hear what our bass sounds like from 1' away, then we need to find a sound that will sound like that 20' or more away, once it has bounced around the stage and room and competed with the other instruments on the stage.

For years, I was uncomfortable with my soloed bass sound reminding me of a diesel locomotive when I hit the solo button on the board. Eventually, though, I decided that that it's how it sounds in the mix that matters.

Disclaimer: aside from the limiter on the PJB Super Flightcase - which only hits every once in a while - I don't use a compressor live. But, I also feel that to object to it on principle is a bit closed minded. The old chestnut, "That may work in practice, but it would never work in theory" comes readily to mind.

TLDR: Try it and see!
 
My last post (until I can try one) on this subject less anyone think I am TOO interested, but I got into the idea of a tube preamp in the first place partly because cats like Dave Holland use them...He uses the Retrospec which IS a preamp compressor (a limiter compressor which is what we are talking about here anyway not the noisy country guitar kind of compressor) Not that Dave always has the greatest sound, but he DOES have the greatest technique and plays with loud drummers effortlessly.
I think that running a Keeley Bassist AFTER the Sarno V8 would be the way, so that you get the mojo of the Piezo/tube impedance and the wideness of that, but also like a belt on a fat man the compressor could keep the sound focused and directional after being plumped.
It seems like from listening to what the sound does to electric basses on youtube it brings your sound forward some. It does not seem like a transparent limiter compressor is going to mess up a piezo sound too much or kill your ability to play dynamics.
Also then there is the limiter which personally I could use ( I occasionally bonk my speaker and the MAS16 I had, which was stolen, would bonk more frequently and THAT speaker could really use a well placed limiter.I miss the 16 and would get one again, if I ever get to play more gigs.)
 
I also put my hpf first, because it has high input impedance it allows me to get that correct, and because I don't want my compressor cutting a ton of stuff. I like to set it so that I know that it's working, I can kind of feel it in the response of the strings, but if you can hear it pumping and squashing, then that's too much.

I think this is the right approach.

Here's the logic IMHO: If you don't intend to use sub bass, what is the point of including it in the signal that keys the compressor? Depending upon the compressor it may or may not make difference though.

If I am using EQ to peak certain frequency ranges, I generally prefer to compress before I apply the EQ. In my experience the EQ peak can cause the compressor to produce undesirable results.

If you want to compress a certain frequency ranges more or less, you can insert an EQ into some compressors' sidechain. With this type of setup, the compressor keys off an equalized signal, but it compresses a flat signal.

A compressor does not bring your sound forward. It narrows the dynamic range. A compressed signal can then be placed a bit more forward in the mix, and still lay where it is supposed to.

In the FM radio wars multi-band peak limiters, like the Aphex Dominator, where used to create the perception that different radio stations had a louder signal. What was going on is there are limits to how modulated the radio signal can be, and the station would get fined for over modulating. Note. The audio level and level of modulation are directly proportional. So peak limiting was used to lop off the peaks of the music so it could be turned up, without exceeding modulation limits. This reduced dynamic range and increased the nominal level of the audio.

As a performer, compression can make you overplay. When you hit the compressor, the bass no longer responds to your inputs in a linear way. Essentially you thump harder and don't get the response you are looking for, so you thump even harder. As an example, it's generally a bad idea to use heavy compression on vocal monitors as this will tend to cause the singers to blow out their voices. Some vocalists can't even stand light compression because it makes them feel disconnected from their voice.

Another problem is compression reduces gain before feedback, which can be a serious factor with amplified upright bass, especially if you want to use a mic. The issue here is the gain is variable. When you thump hard the compressor clamps down and limits gain. When you play softer or stop playing, the compressor releases and opens up to max gain.

The next thing to understand is when you use a compressor there is an associated reduction in gain when you are above the compression threshold. In order to maintain a nominal output level, you must apply make up gain to boost the signal back up to where it was.


Here is where the problem comes in and reduces gain before feedback. When you stop playing and the compressor releases, this makeup gain is added to the gain you already had before you applied the compressor. This is what I mean when I say a compressor adds gain to the signal path between transients. This increased gain can make it challenging to play softer passages with the proper sensitivity. Even without a compressor, I sometimes find that playing pianissimo passages can be challenging with the amp cranked up to the level I need to carry a loud band. Compression will exacerbate this problem.

Think of it this way. Compressors bring the high SPLs down and low SPLs up. Pop music has a very limited dynamic range so compressors can be wonderful tools. If you play music with a wide dynamic range, about all you will likely do is apply compression to the loudest passages.

The exception might be if you have a compressor that adapts in real time. Or you could use two compress set to different thresholds and different compression ratios. One compressor kicks in early with a very low ratio; the second kicks in with a higher ration.

Don't think I am trying to discourage you from experimenting, because I am not. If you do experiment, I think you will have a better understanding of what I am staying. Also you may find compression is extremely useful in certain circumstances, so by all means have some fun and learn something.

this is why its important to set the compressor correctly. and, i dont advocate compression as a matter of course for all DB. i personally am using it to correct a problem, mainly, the surface mounted realist creates such a transient at the beginning of the note, that is not heard by the ear listening to a normal acoustic bass, so, i am using compression to eliminate the hyped transient and make it sound more like a natural, acoustic bass. i dont know if i would recommend a compressor with a bridge mounted pickup as i think i would want the exact opposite, more transient, but of course, it depends on the bass

That's how the limiter worked on the 200MB. It was tied to the Master Volume Control in the signal path. So, when it was engaged it prevented "bonking" at higher volumes. Sorry about that 1/6, I know you loved that speaker.

this is why its important to set the compressor correctly. and, i dont advocate compression as a matter of course for all DB. i personally am using it to correct a problem, mainly, the surface mounted realist creates such a transient at the beginning of the note, that is not heard by the ear listening to a normal acoustic bass, so, i am using compression to eliminate the hyped transient and make it sound more like a natural, acoustic bass. i dont know if i would recommend a compressor with a bridge mounted pickup as i think i would want the exact opposite, more transient, but of course, it depends on the bass

I haven't seen a spectral analysis of an upright bass equipped with a Realist, but my impression is it picks up a lot more resonance in the low mids than with a bridge mounted pickup. I used a Realist for at least a decade and it was not a great choice for my last bass. This bass's body was extremely resonant and mounting a pickup directly on the body tended to over emphasize the resonance. This produced what I would describe as a boxy tone through the amp.

While I could see how a compressor might smooth out the leading edge of this type of a resonance, I still think EQ would probably be a better solution as EQ is not dependent on the volume you play at. But if it works for you, :thumbsup:.

I will concede that EQ was not totally effective in removing the boxy quality from the specific bass I mentioned above. The problem with this bass is the resonance is wide band, and IMHO intentional. The designers idea was to make a very powerful acoustic bass. You could hear the resonance somewhat without an amp as well, but in an acoustic ensemble playing you would never notice it. IMHO, in this case the bass was simply not well suited to amplification.

Yes, as I said, I use a high-pass filter in front of the compressor because there are a ton of infrasonics with this pickup as well. This particular bass does not have a huge acoustic tone nor does it have any resonances, which is maybe why I'm having better success with a compressor with mine than you did. I have a couple 7/8 size basses that sound glorious acoustically but do not amplify well at all

my Presonus Eureka mic pre has a 'sidechain high pass filter' in the compressor section. I have always bypassed the compression when I have used it live, but experimenting with the sidechain hpf set around 300Hz seemed to give me a nice little boost in the highs. I don't experiment much with any of the settings live because it is really hard to see where those tiny knobs are pointing!
