computer still running slow.

Most of the processes you highlighted are fine, don't see anything really out of the ordinary here.

What are the specs of this computer?

EDIT: Nevermind, I just looked them up. Specs like that... You could honestly just have a newer program that's eating up all the memory or processing power. Do you have any Norton or MacAffee software installed with all features turned on? That would certainly do it.

How did you look up the specs of my computer? I don't even know them :p

I'm guessing by the hiding smiley I shouldn't delete system 32?

I try to keep as many programmes closed as I can, I just usually have firefox and sometimes itunes open. Even if I close down everything after it's gone laggy it still doesn't get any better for a while afterwards.

It's an inspiron 1300, right? I went and checked the other thread, then googled it. :D

No, for the love of God, if you don't know about the system32 folder already, don't EVER touch it unless you want Microsoft brand hellfire and brimstone to rain down upon you and all those you ever loved...

...Maybe a bit of an exaggeration... But still.

When you say "keep as many programs closed as you can" are we talking just applications or the background processes as well? How about automated services, what's running in there?

No no, it's not an inspiron that's the laptop I'm eventually going to fix. I don't even know the brand of this pc or the specs, I know it has 1gig of ram though! :p And I'm talking applications, As I said before I can't open task manager to check background processes.

Instructions are there, start going back to hijackthis and mark all the lines that are red on the log analyzer. Ask the program to fix them. Reboot computer, repeat process. You have several problems there. After you see no more reds start taking care of the rest, but carefully. Purple lines can be trouble. Black italic ones too. I see you have AVG, which has given me a lot of trouble with the new version. Uninstall it on Control Panel and download and install Avast, it's free. Use Avast to scan the whole computer. Ask if you need further help...

Atleast try the Ubuntu Live CD. If you go to their site, you can sign up for a free CD of ubuntu, and they'll send one to you. It takes about 5-6 weeks for delivery, so if you dont want to wait, you can download and burn the image.

Now what is this Live CD you ask?

A live cd is basically a trial run of the OS. You put it in your cd drive, it loads, and you can try Ubuntu, WITHOUT installing it. It just loads into RAM. During a Live session, you can access the files, games, internet etc plus many things. Things will take a while to load (like the games) but thats because its running from the CD drive, but once installed its much faster and smoother.

How do I install said Ubuntu You ask?

The ubuntu installer is easy to follow. Once you load the live session, there will be an Install icon on the desktop. You'll have options to either install ubuntu on the whole HDD, Install it on the remaining space left on your HDD KEEPING your win XP install, OR make your own partition table. Basically like FDISK but better :D

If you have some basic ubuntu questions, ask away/PM.

EDIT: just to let you know, About 99.9% (should be 100% but just in case there is something i Don't know of)of those SppedupmyPC's or RAMBOOST PLUS or REGFIXTER ALLSTAR don't work. It could actually make your computer worse.
And it looks like you have some missing DLL's. Instead of going through all those steps, its MUCH easier to backup and install XP ( or ubuntu) fresh.

OK.....I do this for local people's comps all the time. It's a piece of cake. All free.

First download CCleaner. Run it and delete bad files. Run the registry option and fix as well.

Then download SuperAntiSpyware. Run it. Delete bad files.

Then download Malwarebytes' antimalware program. Run it. Delete all problems.

Then download Spybot search & destroy. Do not install the tea timer. Run it and fix all problems.


Do this in the order I have laid out...and you will be good to go. It's a good idea to run CCleaner to delete all those excessive startup programs after you are done cleaning as well. Run CCleaner once a month...and the others once a month or two(in the same order)...and you'll be flyin.

let me second brick top's suggestions. even if you only downloaded malwarebytes you'd be pretty set, but the full compliment he has there is a solid solution to these kinds of situations.

if you still have problems after you do this, you may have some kind of rootkit going on. check out rootkit revealer, see if there's one on your system.

Do what I outlined above...and all bogus crap will be gone. You can then remove programs you don't want, either through windows uninstaller, or manually without fear of the programs protecting themselves from removal.

For keeping your comp defragged....get Ashampoo Magic Defrag. Never have to run a defrag again.
