converting .m4a files to .wav or .aif

As I think someone pointed out, when you find a converter, it's better to convert to .aif, .wav, flac or alac. You won't gain any quality going from the lossy to a lossless format, but you'll potentially/likely lose quality by converting .m4a to .mp3 (lossy to lossy).
Because I have ~5 years worth of recordings that were already done in the Voice Memo app. This whole exercise is about archiving and then accessing stuff that's already in the can.
Absolutely. If you have a computer, Audacity is the program to go. But I had a moments where I had to have files converted at work, and I can't install programs on someones device. In those cases m4a to wav online converter is a way to go. I use it now and then as I mentioned in one of the previous threads.
But then again, If you have time, get Audacity, it is one of the best free programs for sound editing!
Late to this thread but ran into the same issue archiving old Voice Memo recordings. If you're on someone else's machine and can't install Audacity, AhaConvert does m4a to wav right in the browser, no install needed. It won't magically add quality back since the source is still AAC, but at least you get a properly readable wav your DAW won't choke on. Free, and it auto-deletes the files after, which is nice if you're converting stuff off a work computer.
