Aside from being Patti Smith's longtime guitarist and musical partner, he's been a rock historian/author, album producer(Suzanne Vega's first is a perfect example), and most important, in a small way changed the course of rock with his landmark Nuggets compilation(s), fairly overlooked in its time, but went on to be influential for a younger crowd, and fostered a growing retrospective reissue market for a neglected past…

From 1988, I would have loved to have been there! Fishbone, Public Enemy and Living Colour are still performing.
