The story is well known and it’s no news that Elvis was an ill tempered, snarky drunk in his younger days. That was an unfortunate comment made to one of Americas greatest songwriters. It would have been great had he apologized soon after. That being said, this was 1979. That’s a long time ago and a long time not forgive someone. Especially, for someone who has written so many great songs and has given so much through charity for organizations like Amnesty international, Bridge School, Creative Coalition, Eva Bronson Foundation, Feeding America, Global Poverty Project, Music Empowers Foundation, WhyHunger, and Witness.

If the man was still truly racist today, why would ?uestlove work with him? I think over the past 42 years we’ve all matured and have grown up a little bit, wouldn’t you say? Im willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. YMMV

I know, and of course you are correct...we all make mistakes, says things we should not say. Even Ray Charles was gracious at the time ("drunk talk")

Because his voice and styling are so unique I linked them to the bad things early on and long ago...I'm old...and my musical DNA come mostly from my time as the only white kid working in a service station in Norfolk, VA in the late 60's. I'm proud of the nickname from my workmates - (Blue-eyed Soul Brother)
I associated EC's comments with some of the very ugly things I had to hear and witness in those times.

Not that it helps but I'm also not happy about Ozzy Osbourne's conduct at the Alamo either...

I will work on moving this to "neutral" in my process...

And let us get back to "Cool Rock n Roll photos"

Elvis also played a Rock Against Racism* benefit and sang backup on The Specials' "Free Nelson Mandela" (after producing their first album).

*That organization was started in part because of Eric Clapton's racist onstage rant in the mid-'70s which, along with some awful comments of his on Hendrix, really seemed to fly under the radar for a long time.
