Wow, I haven't thought about Jon for ages; I was aquainted with him way back in the days when Largo was on Fairfax, he was just starting his "nights" there after The Grays broke up. I did a gig with Marty Willson-Piper, once of The Church, at The Mint and Jon sat in. Jeez, a lifetime ago.

It was a strange experience, in a few ways, including lot of long-time-ago and coincidences. In the Q&A, Greg Anderson was reflecting back, saying he isn't the person he was way back; I can completely relate because we're all in the age 52 to 58 zone.

e.g. I don't know if you'll recognize the whole trough-line so I'll risk over-explaining in an autism spectrum fashion... Anderson and O'Malley love Slint. They played Spiderland on the PA before going on. I saw Slint the first time they ever played in Chicago, between Tweez (still have mine on Jennifer Hartman Records vinyl) and Spiderland, at Club Dreamerz on Milwaukee Ave. David Pajo played his guitar through an SVT that night. Pajo did stuff with Tortoise and Corgan... we were all part of the same local music/art social circle then... I knew all those people... either acquaintances, friends and neighbors or my regular bar tender at the corner (Rainbo Club), etc. Brad Wood... same deal. Brad's Idful Studios was about one block from where I first saw Slint! Pajo, Brad Wood and John Herndon (Johnny Machine/A Grape Dope) live in L.A. now at least part time. Liz Phair, for that matter... Yeah, I knew her too... Greg Anderson and Pajo did Nazarite. Anderson and Petra Haden recorded Forest Nocturne with Brad Wood about a year ago.

Also, speaking of MBV, I knew Jimi Shields, Kevin's younger brother, in Chicago back in that period of my life. We all lived in the same neighborhood/area around Wicker Park (AKA Guyville) when it was still too sketchy for most people from the outside to move in.

I could go on and on with true stories I was involved in from back then that are simultaneously boring and unbelievable.

Yeah, I've got all sorts of weird "6 degrees of separation"(depending on the criteria) conections with famous and cult music figures, not from being a stalker or hanger-on or anything like that, but sometimes from just showing up, plus from work(sometimes even co-workers). That started even before I moved to LA, but a lot of it would be boring to most people. You know, I doubt that many here know of Slint, and in my case I knew Archer Prewitt of The Sea and Cake.

Prewitt, Prekop... more neighborhood faces from long ago. I was always out doing things back then. Ed Roeser called me ubiquitous. Everyone knew me by my nickname but few knew my real name.

Now, I hardly go out; maybe twice a year. I felt like I barely remembered how to drive to the cemetery Friday night, and in traffic.

If I lived out there in the desert--I've considered it--there would be virtually no chance at all I'd have gone to that show.

Ha! There's Doug playing bass! Doug McCombs... That's him, right?

He was a door guy at Rainbo Club for years. Herdon was a bar back then a bar tender (and a great bar DJ). John Haggerty from Naked Raygun, Pegboy, Stiff Little Fingers was a bar tender there a really long time.

EDIT: Yeah, that's Doug and McEntire.

Probably, with Archer on the Dano. Archer previously played in a lounge band, The Cocktails, who moved en masse from KC to Chicago, 1990-ish, but before that, he played bass(a Guild A/E, shades of Violent Femmes)in this trio(I had a hand in recording this album)…

Yeah, that's Doug and John McEntire.

I was roommates with a girl who dated Doug and Doug's girlfriend previous to my old roommate lived above my previous apartment around the corner of the Rainbo Club. John Herndon with another girl I know, who also moved to L.A., lived in the place directly in front of mine.

This was at the heart of where Nelson Algren lived, hung out and wrote about.

I vaguely remember the The Cocktails.
