First band name I thought of in high school was Cambium Layer (it's part of a tree) - sounded like a great name for a really heavy band. This was around 1969 or so. You know, heavy like Iron Butterfly.
Then, a friend and I came up with Los Dukes. It was written in graffiti on a wall near a record store we'd frequent in Van Nuys, CA, and my friend's last name is Duke. We wound up naming our intramural basketball team that in college. Googling it yesterday I found out there's a punk band in Argentina with the name!
We also came up with Big Nurse, based on an R. Crumb character (and originally from Nurse Ratched in Cuckoo's Nest, I think). That became the name of our intramural football team. Apparently there's since been a band in New Jersey with the name.
The name that stuck for our projected band that never really got anywhere, but we still thought of as the best name ever, was Smeg Ma Ta. Oh, what might have been. . .
Lots of possibilities since then. Maybe Barney Fife and the Fudgepackers.
