Cop Stop....Yet Again....

I *submit* to no man (or woman, except for TLSteph, SWMBO). As I said, driving is a privilege. When you get your *license*, issued by the *state*, you agree to play by its rules. Don't like the rules? Don't play. I'll agree with you about the TSA, though...! And you don't have to fly, either.

You don't have to, as you say, submit. You could join the Free Staters, or the Sovereign Citizens. Good luck w/that. You don't HAVE to say anything. All you have to do is give the nice police officer your license, reg, and in some states, your POI. My suggestion? Chat him/her up. Be cool, and nice. If you think you could do a better job, try applying for the gig.

If the cop's doing the job he/she was hired to do, AND MOST ARE, I have no problem answering a few questions roadside, because I know, statistically speaking, out of the next 4 stops he/she makes, chances are one of them will be impaired on any Friday or Saturday night. THAT'S the person he/she is looking for, and getting that person off the road might save YOUR life.

Agree?

I don't think that the issue being discussed here is whether drunk driving is wrong or not,
I'm sure that everyone agrees that it shouldn't be done.

The issue here is the Police pulling innocent people over just to see if they may have been drinking or not.

Note that this is a COURT decision. Anyone who thinks this type of decision makes any sense at all needs to consider a lot of other court-mandated nonsense that has been adjudicated in the last decade or two. PC has replaced common sense.

Honestly, Jeff, can you READ? The appeals court upheld a city policy, promulgated by the government goons. I am sure the hired cops were stellar students in the Academy, though!

At least where I am, the police are trained in what to look for vis a vis drunk/impaired drivers. Making a stop on a whim doesn't cut it in court - the officer will have the case dismissed by any good defense lawyer. (See previous content about good cops/bad cops//good stops/bad stops//probable cause.) I cannot vouch for other locales. Have I heard the stories? Yep, right here. And if anyone here feels aggrieved by perceived bias, there are certainly legal actions one may take.

Just make sure you have your ducks in a row, 'cause the last thing a judge wants/needs to hear is another frivolous lawsuit in district court.

Profile me all you want to. I have nothing to hide. I don't drink, use drugs, cheat on my taxes or my wife, and live my life as if everything I do is a matter of public record

neither do I. I don't even smoke cigarettes... I used to be in a bar every friday and saturday night, because I was the bouncer

but I had long hair, and I do drive flashy sports cars, and custom harleys

look at this pic for a moment, and tell me how you think it is impossible that I would get pulled over on general purposes...then consider how annoying it can become if it happens regularly

after a while it did stop, but I have had my share of encounters with LE. There are some good officers. Then there are some buttheads with badges. Those are the ones who abuse the privileges given to them. These individuals are no better then common criminals, and what is worse, some people have blind faith in them

Don't you get it? I also have nothing to hide. Most of us don't. But I do not want to be under the scrutiny of an agent of the state who, without cause, can interrogate us without practical limits. And, even if you have nothing to hide, unless you are a masochist you do not want to be beholden to the state's agents, either.

Yes, its a bad decision. I didn't say it was a good decision. I personally think if a person feels the calling to be a cop, the bar should necessarily be set high to eliminate the ones Lee H referred to.

This type of decision discourages the folks who would make the best cops.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on points. You are obviously a person who chafes at authority, and I can respect that. I certainly believe that authority can be overbearing and burdensome at times.

However, when it comes to getting drunk/impaired drivers off the road, I am on the side of LE. Its that simple.

I totally get it, and I'm willfully giving myself up for interrogation at anytime if it means there will be less criminals out on the road.

I've known cops, and I've known criminals. If you ask me who I want to give more rights and protection to, it's the cops every time

what are you so paranoid about? it's not YOU they are after, so just nof you head, answer the questions, and let them move onto the real criminals
