Coronavirus discussion thread - NO POLITICS, or "POLITICS by PROXY"

I'm quite comfortable with the new normal, because I can't even recall how long it's been since I went out to see a live performance or any sort of entertainment.
My life has barely changed TBH, but it has made me realize just how often I do go out & about. (for food)

Can't visit anyone right now of course, which is a bummer, but it's obviously for their own safety.
It has somewhat shattered my illusion that I'm reclusive, but not entirely.

Infomercials are entertaining on a Sunday afternoon, I'm about ready to buy a Emeril Power Air-Fryer 360° :woot:

That's the thing I miss the most, from the "mundane" things of course.

Obviously not counting family and friends. And job, of course.

It's the live music and football (soccer). Do I miss those!

I had tickets for Dave Holland, Snarki Puppy, Stomp, a Queen cover band, and Shabaka Hutchings. All canceled, of course.

The pandemic is bad, but not bad enough to seriously disrupt long term food supply.
I don’t have any doomsday thoughts about the food supply.

The institutional, food service, restaurant consumption is way down.
The home consumption is up.
Different producers and suppliers serve different markets.
Perishable items with a short shelf life will get dumped.

A big problem for milk producers is schools. All schools are closed. Milk is served at breakfast and lunch. Those students are not necessarily drinking milk at home. If they are, it’s from the supermarkets and there are still spotty supplies at some markets.

Production and distribution will get adjusted. When things open back up, expect some temporary shortages and price increases.

I just think the mods don’t want arguing and alarmist speculation, nor any party politics.

He said he hopes someone with knowledge of the situation weighs in. He wants it on-point and appropriate and is not looking forward to marshaling a train wreck of a thread again at 1:30am.

^^^This. Or waking up the next morning and looking forward to reading stories about how people are coping with this global event that should unite us all and reports from our bass brethren overseas, and instead discovering that someone who pretends not to understand the spirit of the rules instead keeps seeing how close to the letter of them they can get and still get away with it and getting the thread shut down instead.

Seriously, it's really not that complicated. Here, again, are the spirit of the rules. They are remarkably in line with the spirit of the site rules:

1) No Politics, or politics by proxy
2) No pot-stirring or arguing. Honestly, I think that is the biggest problem in this thread so far. Some people seem to love to argue, and the pandemic has limited their ability to do that elsewhere, so it comes out sideways and ends up here.
3) No blame game. If you think country X or politician X or tinfoil hat conspiracy X caused this predicament, fine, whatever. But don't bring it up here. This leads to arguing, which leads to politics by proxy.
4) Arguing about economic strategies lines up along partisan lines. Big govt. vs. small govt., free market vs. greater public good, importance of the economy vs. public health concerns etc. That stuff is all partisan politics and does not belong here. And it leads to arguing, which is the main thing we are trying to avoid.

Facts are fine. Statistics are fine, except when they start to enter the realm of "why is this different than the regular flu", which has already been addressed here about 100 times.* How we are all coping with being cooped up in our homes is fine. Why are people freaking out and hoarding toilet paper/sanitizer/hair dye/thermometers etc, is fine. In short, we are all human beings dealing with similar human issues due to this global event. How are we coping? How are the public health statistics trending in various locations? These are the main things this thread exists for.

* Seriously, I hate to be that guy, but in this case, do a search... of this thread.

Right now I'm picturing a few billion people needing haircuts at once, and that's kinda fun

Not me, brother. I buzzed mine this morning, just like every Sunday. This is probably the one time when being a baldy is actually an advantage.

I used to do the self buzz cut for something like 18 years (punk aesthetic, some things die hard) but in the last four I’ve had a styled cut. Been going to the same woman the whole time.

I need to find a way to pay her now for future haircuts. I’m due which means she isn’t getting paid. Venmo? Never used it before. Anyone have advice for person to person electronic payments?

Sad news with Tim Brooke Taylor today

When I was a kid The Goodies was probably my favorite TV Show.

Awww, man...I hadn't heard this. Another huge Goodies fan here.:crying:

I hate that there's so many people dying that have been important to others, and that might have been better publicised if not for the amount of other deaths happening.
Obviously not in any way saying celebrities are more important or deserving of press than 'normal' people, but some people do make a bigger impact.

If you contact her, ask how she could take payment - Venmo, PayPal, Square...

On the haircut subject...I do wish I'd got a haircut before our lockdown.
I do have a clipper set here somewhere, but never used it...I'm trying to work up the nerve to go for it...maybe after a couple of stiff whiskies?

And I saw this earlier, which I think makes a good point...

Count me as being one of them. Not looking forward to that day.

I look better with long hair.

That's the way I feel about myself as well...

At 53, I've got more now than I had when I was 18.

God bless you, since we're of similar age and I most certainly have lost some over the past 30+ years. Not all that much, but definitely some.

Funny thing being, I've got less than 5 gray hairs on my head but a *ton* of them in my beard. Go figure.

I gave myself a pre-op haircut back in January because I wasn't sure I'd be able to lift my arms well enough to shampoo. Turns out I was fine and the haircut grew out as badly as I figured it would, which is to say very badly. Now I really really really need a haircut. my hair is my one good physical feature and I'm a tad vain about it. since I won't have a good crop of it for much longer, I want to make the most of every moment with it :crying:

Being a redhead, I have zero gray on my head but my goatee is almost entirely gray. Funny how that works........
