Never had a 2-12 cab before, but with cabs becoming so lite weight, it seems like that could be the ultimate (subjective) cab for some.

I'm thinking a lot of cone surface area would sound nice at low volume (like practicing, there's a idea), and for a "playing out" situation having, again, lots of air moving. Easier to hear oneself (?) -

I've been considering the single 15, 'cause that's what I've had in the past and Revsound's 2-10 cab, for example, has received lots of praise.
Blows my mind how light weight cabs are these days compared to yesteryears, I used to have a JBL Cabaret Series single 15 cab that weighed 95 lbs. That was fun.

Thought it would be fun to get some players feedback.
So, any comments on 115s vs. 212s, or whatever configuration, will be appreciated.

Thanks. For any input.

edit: It's the change of cabs (some) being lite weight that makes me even consider a 2-12. Before such easy portability, don't think I would consider that configuration. Thus the motivation for this thread start.

Check out the Rev bass cab club.

I play both. The single 15 I use at small room gigs where the volume does not need to be all that loud. I use the 212 at outdoor shows, or rooms where the volume needs to be louder. Best of both worlds.

That really is the best of both worlds.

For some reason I like the idea of single driver cabinets. Don't really know why. Must be the minimalism attitude I have. Though it contradicts the 2-12 idea.

Post SVT in search of the quieter stage, I toured with a pair of those Cabaret cabs. 1 each side of the stage nestled in along with the sidefills.
That was one of the most brutal 1 15 cabs ever. Both to move and in terms of volume. They were stout! Am sure glad I don't still have them ;-)

I have a GK neo 212 ii seems pretty nice. Mostly I'll have it as back line for Sound co gigs. Just getting used to a pair of 1x12's. Aguilar dB-112 NT. I like the cone roll off more that a tweeter. Hangover from the SVT and fridge. So far I'm liking the Aguilar's a lot. I'll kinda revisit in the new year after fall and holiday gigs and see if this is it for a while or if I am retooling again...

This cabinet , better than any 410 I've used . Outdoors on a big stage sounded clear but with a very large low end . I kept asking our drummer if it was too loud and he said he loved it . 212 Deltalites .

Running a lot of power through a single driver is a big ask. From both thermal and excursion standpoints...
Although I have other cabs, what I actually use these days is 1 or 2 1x12. Neo's for the portability...
1 in 8-Ohm mode throttles my MB500 Fusion back to the ~300W the driver is rated for.
This is good for rehearsals, stage monitoring where there is good FOH coverage, and acoustic coffeeshop type gigs.
2 for outdoor shows presents a 4-Ohm load to the amp and I get the full 500W the amp has to give, but each driver sees only 250.
2 smaller cabs is also a little more versatile in the logistics department.

Yes, when I can, I use the single 15, a Schroeder 15PL. Easy schlepp, sounds good, and, most of my gigs are of the small room variety lately. This Summer though, a lot of outdoor shows, some with PA support, I took the 212, a Genzler 212T cab. These shows have PA support, mostly, but the stages are bigger and the band is more spread out, so the 212 does the job there. When I really need volume though and the stage is large, I will bring another Schroeder 15 cab and stack the PL on it. There is a club here where they actually tell you to turn up instead of down, believe it or not, where I'll take that rig.

I didn't buy it at first but now I am a believer. Switched my double ampeg 410 rig for a neo 212 combo. It's way better than I thought it would be and provides the same level of volume I was using before (never had to crank the ampegs, was just tired of getting buried in the mix).

If you have half decent PA support you really can't go wrong with one of these modern 212 designs.

jnewmark,

Do I remember right that you use to have a Bassic 15 cab?

Yes, I tried a number of 115 cabs before I settled on the Schroeder. The Bassic 15 was a favorite for awhile, slightly larger than the Schro, but without a tweeter. It had the Faital 15. Very close sounding to a JBL K140 driver,( my fave 15 of all time ), but lacking that sweet top end that the JBL had. That's what I was missing from the Bassic, and sold it and got the Schro, which really punches through in a nice way. But, I could have lived with the Bassic 15, even though its more of an awkward schlepp.

I bought a used GB 2x12 NeoX cabinet some years ago
It sounds great, easy to move, and $450 on the used market (then)
I keep thinking about trying something new and lightweight like Duke, Mesa, Genzler, etc. but haven't because what I have works great for me

I haven't found a 1x15 or a 2x10 that will keep up
Ironically my ancient 2x15 with 421's does very well but too big and heavy
Berg HT322 is super great but literally twice the weight and awkward to move
