Could we cool it with the bass jargon?

I just find the humor in the use of all this internet jargon which outweighs any annoyance it might cause.

Imagine if VOIP was mandatory to communicate on forums. If you used all this lingo seriously it'll get pretty awkward at some point.

No. Keep it that way. It encourages participation as new people will either do a search, be a member and probably post. We are happy to help. I also do not know many terms and learning as I go along. Try going to the effects forum if you are a hardcore cable + tuner only kind of guy. You'll feel like a newbie.

Musicians have their own lingo? Mind. Blown.

Here's an example of where it is helpful to spell-out certain abbreviations we take for granted; I have a fb page for my bass finishing/bass making biz. I keep it active by posting development on new builds/projects etc. When I create a description for each photo posted, I do not write fb - I write-out finger-board, likewise not tr, but truss-rod. Sometimes I'll explain what a truss-rod is/does because people looking are both musicians and non-musicians. We're all insiders here on tb, but just the same there are new players joining every day along with experienced players. Everyone likes being an insider, to understand the jargon and 'identify'. The object is connection - not exclusion. We just all want to be on the same page.

There's gotta be a "dictionary" thread you can refer to in order to get your bass jargon down.

I believe there are several glossaries, lexicons, etc. on the TalkBass website (yes I said TalkBass rather than TB - so sue me). ak56 gave a link to one of them in post #33 on this thread. And if this was discussed later, sorry, I'm at work and don't have time to read all of these posts undetected.

Oh, I did, over 40 years ago, but not in those words of course, when my ‘peers’(some even younger)started giving me grief about me getting into The Ramones and Sex Pistols while still clutching their worn out Woodstock albums. I tried telling a older brother of a friend of mine, a huge Byrds and Animals fan, about this album...

...and he replied, “I don’t wanna hear that punk rock crap, he’s got a leather jacket”. For the record, because of their pre-‘Pepper’s’ 60’s image and retro sound, they were considered/promoted as “new wave” in the beginning. So, boomers were turning into their parents a long time ago.

Just ask. Don't be so self conscious that you can't ask TB for clarification..they will give it to you.

This also goes for anything in life. The notion that not knowing what is being tossed around makes you dumb...when in reality acting like you know when you don't is the only thing that could make you seek dumb.

Shouldn't have to ask. Communication should be clear on first reading. Nobody has time to do homework to figure out what someone is trying to say.

The only thing that will get us through this is humor, and maybe music, though according to a recent report all live music is canceled - so humor it is.

Alright, so Sting's Bass vs. StingRay is settled in favor of "Sting" and "Ray" respectively. Next question?

I feel many abbreviations/codes are already part of our community. For reference sake here are ones commonly used that most people here would understand. Some are obvious and have been around a long time. Some are bass-centric and others are player/playing related. There are others which can be added to determine how commonly (or not) they are understood. Feel free to add.

pu = pick-up
fb = fingerboard
tr = truss-rod
P/P-bass/P = Fender Precision bass
J/J-bass/J = Fender Jazz bass
P/J = a bass, usually Fender but not always with a split & single pu combo
Beatle bass = Hofners violin bass
fridge = Ampeg with 8 speaker cab
FOH = front of house sound system
Dano = Danelectro
long-horn (bass) = Danelectro bass with long upper and lower symmetric "horns"
boner bass = reference to longer upper horn on late-'80s/early '90's P's and J's designed by George Binda at Fender
3TSB = three tone sunburst
Oly wht = Olympic white
BL = band leader
hippy sandwich = bass made of multi-laminated exotic woods
ss = short-scale, stainless-steel, solid-state
rig = amp/speaker cabinet
combo (amp) = combined amp/speaker unit
axe (antiquated) = bass/guitar/instrument
downbeat = live set start
pause for the cause = pee break

There is now no further need to discuss this topic, cause we can always refer back to this post...
so print it and tape it on a wall somewhere near your electronic device of choice...

Did 7ender ever have an L Series of instruments? I thought it was, simply, a prefix to a range of S/Ns (serial numbers).

That's the same thing. Another common example is "E series" MIJ Fender basses that are highly regarded among most Fender fans. Those are 1984-1987 E serial number basses (and guitars).
