Couple of Primus questions..

I was just going to post the exact same thing!
The classic Claypool sound came from a modded ADA MP-1 that was designed to be used for guitar, at least the distorsion section. He used this along with the Mesa 2x15 cabs. I got a pretty good look at the man and his rig as I was being escorted out of the pit during a Sausage show back in 92 or 93. Instead of throwing me out of the venue, they decided to remove me from the pit area and instead keep on the side if the stage! It was great...I got to witness one of my childhood bass heros up close and personal. As far as Ampeg goes, I'm pretty sure that Les has been playing their stuff for some time now. If I had to venture a guess, I would say that he's been playing their stuff for about 6 or 7 years now and maybe even longer.

On the family values tour of '99 (Going by the laquerhead vid) He's still using Mesa gear there. Though I think he tried Ampeg classic's on some of the brown album stuff..

It's a Digital Music Corp. Ground Control...which is currently discontinued. You can get the GC Pro, which is way more expensive. It's just a midi controller to switch patches on the ADA's.

Few things... anyone know where i can get all the Woodstock '94 video's? I have 4.. and i want the whole set they played..
Also, in what way do you mean modified ADA? What did he do with it?


ALSO. The family Values 99 Tour, anyone know what he has in his rack? Is it the Ampeg's? He has two Mesa Diesel 2x15 cabs and two Mesa Diesel Powerhouse cabs (One, on the right, looked like it could be a 610 though...i'm not sure). I tried getting a pic of his rack (sounds, dirty..) but when i copied it into paint etc, the window where the DVD was playing went black if i saved as a jpg or just messed up if it was bmp.

That rig with his Ebony bass sounds awesome imo.

Well I have to bring up a point here. Les Claypool is probably the worst bassist technique-wise probably ever. I was listening to his solo for "Those Damned Blue Collared Tweekers" at Woodstock '94, and he has no idea what the hell he's playing. Maybe Tim just wanted to be with a band who everyone had set parts or something like that.

I actually really like that solo (Clean one). It is kind of random, it's what grabs you, i think it's pretty wicked. But just to say one thing, i'm sure he knew what he was playing and wanted it to sound like that, but even if he didn't, that doesn't mean he has bad technique.

I must say, i like the sound of tims toms on hulucino more, though i liked his old bass and snare.. Pretty cool white Tama kit though.

What are you talking about man. I saw Primus last year on the Tour de Fromage, and he was amazing for his solo.

I love Claypool but... yeah. Throw on a wacky synth effect, wackity wackity bo a bat, repeat for 15 minutes. Eeeesh. That's my only problem with Primus being a "Jam Band" all of a sudden, Claypool solos sooooOOooOo much. His riffs are killer, but yeah...

i would say his solos have gotten better over the years. the new "jam band" stuff is like, he solos but ler and tim are usually doing some sort of thing too. instead of doing a solo they are doing a trio. i dunno i dig it. his regular solo chops have always been in question. i don't know if anybody has a copy of galactic playing at the first bonnaroo, but les comes out for willie the pimp (zappa) and big bottom. he throws down some sick solos on both of those. I will say the he is always in control of his instrument and its sounds, and his solos are anything but traditional

I just like Primus man, whether it's Les soloing, Ler, Tim, or Brain. They're cool and they have that kind of out style so you don't really know what to expect. He doesn't have to have amazing technique to be a bad ass, and every note doesn't have to perfect. I know a lot of what he does I can't do, and a lot I can, but I didn't write it, and I don't think I would have ever come with it. So I'm impressed. The whole band is awesome. And Ler is so underrated.
