Cover band fees

Alright alright. Never really thought a bunch of grown men would get so offended. So if you guys are gonna start calling me out on some stuff I'll back it up.

First off cover bands I think and this is just my opinion is a huge waste of time no matter how many years you make $10,000 doing it. I've seen bands playing here playing there lounges, weddings, patios, big venues and small venues. It's just not my cup of tea. Plus most guys fudge up the songs anyhow.

Secondly I never said once that my band was the **** and we rule world. Hell I never said the video by Complete was good. I said it was entertaining to me more so than somebody else playing a top 40 tune.

"I also have never played in a cover band, never cared to spend an entire evening making people "dance" at a dive or cheesy bar out in the burbs. Or anywhere for that matter"...per your original post...new member Oct '13...11 posts up to this point.

I like your stuff, man, but I don't get your need to criticize other musicians who don't want to go down your path. Playing material written by others is a time-honored tradition in our musical world, and songwriters make plenty of cash from covers of their tunes ...sometimes way more than their original versions. So all's well.

I no for a fact you have no idea what you are talking about. I have been in the office of hundreds of venues at 2:00 a.m. with my hand stuck out waiting for some cash or a check and have personally seen the updated license hanging on the wall of most of them. Some even have it mounted behind the bar for all to see (if you know what to look for). So either you are just blowing smoke or you have never played the Mid-Atlantic states and surrounding areas.

I did once play a club in Raleigh NC that did not pay the fees. The owner had gone so far as to find out what songs can and can not be played legally without paying them. He had lists of songs that bands were not allowed to play posted on the backs of his house main speakers. (This was a "Beach Music" club and most of the songs were regional. So he only listed oldies by national acts that were commonly requested by those types of crowds..... not every single song that was covered by the fees.)
