my fingers were cracking, peeling and painful, too. after reading this thread, i ordered corn huskers lotion, but found the fragrance was a LOT stronger than it used to be, so i ordered O'Keeffe's Working Hands Hand Cream, and i'm impressed as this product does what it says. i'm applying it 4x per day and all the peeling and cracking is gone - the pain was gone the first day i applied it. and as a bonus, it's unscented.

thanks, TB!

You get the squeeze tube or the tub? The little tub version seemed to work better for me but still not a solution in my case.

i got the little tub version.

how often and how are you applying it? i'm mostly applying it thickly all around the fingertips, letting it sort of soak in, then after a few minutes i rub what's left all over my hands. i also apply it thickly before bed.

is anything working for you so far? have you tried using a water based lotion first, letting it soak in and then applying the working hands cream over the water based lotion?

I did the same thing you did.

What's working for me is pounding water and wearing exam gloves at work while my hands are slathered with Bag Balm or Aquaphor. It kills two birds with one stone. I was washing my hands CONSTANTLY at work and that was part of the problem. Now the gloves keep germs away from me and I sanitize quite often with the gloves on to keep from spreading germs to others. So I'm not scrubbing the natural oils out of my skin and I'm sort of sealing moisture in at the same time.

I've found it works pretty well too ...not as well as Shikai Borage Oil lotion (0 commercial interest), but it does have some staying power vs. other products. Not an LA thing, but gloves are the real answer up here in the chilly Northeast :).

I think you've gotten plenty of suggestions for creams/balms/etc, but I've found these tips to be pretty effective:

- Creams should ideally be applied when the hands are still damp from washing (this helps seal the moisture in)
- The hotter the water used to wash hands, the more they will dry out (working in the medical field, the may not be an option - but lukewarm/cool water will be less drying on your hands)
- Wash your hands less often (again, might not be an option in your line of work)
- Wear gloves anytime you are outside in the cold
- Stop putting your hands in the oven idiot
