YMMV. I have all the fun I need on paying gigs with friends. Because they're serious about their craft too. That can make for a fun gig vs. the alternative.

I'm speaking from my personal experience as a serious player who gets asked to play in basement bands for fun with no goals in sight. Just a "fun hang". Or can I do four or five rehearsals on the other side of town for a $100 gig?

I just joined a similar group. I'm playing lead guitar primarily with a few other instruments to fill out our sound. I am disabled and can't play a gig anymore but I LOVE to make music with other musicians. I have had my time playing paid gigs, opened for national/international touring bands. I even got to back Louisiana Red and Bob Corritore (blues musicians will understand) when they played Albuquerque. I would love to still be playing paid gigs but it's not in the cards. Hopefully the OP won't find themselves in a similar situation.

This isn't directed at me, but for me, I don't need to be paid to play in order to enjoy myself. Some of the best times I've had with a guitar in hand has been informal acoustic jams around a kitchen table. But the rule is that if ANYONE is making money at an event (venue owner, vendors, bar, sound man, whatever) then I'm getting paid. Period.

There are different reasons for being in a band. One band I am in plays jazz - fantastic musicians (and yet they still allow me in the room). It's almost impossible to made decent money here playing jazz, so we gig a couple of times a year. Other than that, we get together and play - the music we want, the way we want to play it. My other band gigs - not the kind of music I would be listening to (mostly modern rock and dance music), but it's what THEY want, and it gets us booked.

but seriously, I have seen some strange craigslist ads related to bands. I've gone on strange tryouts that don't seem to resemble what they said in the ad. I've seen ads SO VAGUE that you wonder why someone bothered to even post them - like one I saw recently that literally only said, "Band looking for a bass player". nothing more. No name. Location. links. age range. type of music. nothing. Craigslist- It's a total crap-shoot.

but here's what I always do - when I see a stupid ad, an arrogant ad, a silly ad, I simply by-pass it. I don't understand craigslist brawls over ads. it makes no sense to me

most start-ups never get to gig 1. Definitely risky to be in one if you want to play out. its certainly not for everyone.

that being said, when I've put an ad out there and said, specifically, I was looking for a rock/pop cover band, that's part-time, and already established, it's amazing how many responses for gigs I'll get from bands that don't even meet that basic criteria. people don't read. or care. Red flag
