I am in an apartment too, where I am downstairs and the lady above me makes way too much noise just walking. (Shes a 90 lb asian, and sounds like a 400 pound dude) , I also have a wife and kids so when they are sleeping, I plug into my amp DI'ed through my Saffire 6 interface, put on some headphones and jam away to my hearts content.

The rebel inside me wants you to jam away and do what you want, but reality is, you could get the cops called and face a ticket. At my complex they are super strict on noise and parties. I had to complain about a party once and they told me that the cops that live here and patrol here know they dont have tolerance and will write tickets.

I had a similar situation years ago. I lived in an apartment above an 80+ year old widow. I had a very small 30 watt practice amp and would play at very low volume and she would still get very mad. I had it turned down so low that I could barely hear it and she told me that it was so loud that it "shook the pictures off her walls". She was mean as hell and had no tolerance at all for even the smallest amount of vibration. I solved the problem in one simple step - I moved ;)

That's acoustics. "Volume" doesn't mean anything, fhe way low frequency move through the air, and move through the structure you're living in. Some 2x4's and some sheetrock isn't too far away from being a giant drumhead ya know..........imagine living inside a drum with your neighbor being the drummer......

That's what you have to do. Apartment living sucks, except you don't have to do yardwork, and they usually have a pool and a gym, and you don't have to fix anything yourself if it breaks, and some of your neighbors might be really cute and walk around in skimpy outfits.

Other than that, it sucks ;)

Getting older is difficult, painful, and often lonely. Treat her the way you'd like to be treated when you're her age.

When given a choice between kindness and something else, choose kindness. :)

Yup - although old people can be difficult to deal with, it's not a bad idea to keep in mind that one day we'll all be in their shoes - and act accordingly...

This. I'll guess that the majority here that suggest harassing this woman to death will be the same one banging on their own ceilings when they reach that age (if the world is really unlucky.)

I have an older neighbor (single family detached homes), and I made sure he knew when he moved in that I would happily turn down any time I was disturbing him. I used to play acoustic drums at times during the day only, and he never heard them. At night, I use my headphones. A little respect and common courtesy goes a long way.

so I have a 96 year old downstairs neighbor who constantly bangs her broom on the ceiling and complains about my family. Were really not that loud, we walk around bear foot and we have cork under our wood floors so sound shouldn't be an issue. But it is, she bangs even when the family laughs at the dinner table. I will be going off to college next year and I have an opportunity to get a vintage ampeg combo. I really need a combo and I want to be able to use it at home but how can I prevent it from vibrating through the floor and downstairs.
There are times throughout the day when it is ok to make noise and then there are those when it isn't.
Where i am, I think by law I can be reasonably noisy between 10am and 6pm(?).
Check how that stands where you are and if you use the combo within the 'ok' times, I can't see a problem really.
and at home there really is no need to turn up a lot anyways, right?

you cant

I was an apartment dweller for 36 years. 5th generation NYC born and raised in Astoria of parents from Brooklyn....

F the neighbors before 10pm :D

I had a set of Romanian immigrants that lived below us and the same thing, they complained and hit their ceiling with a broom when we walked across the carpeted floor.

they would complain when I would play my Peavey minx 110 (35 watt pos) in my bedroom and that was sitting on top of a big heavy wood dresser.

they nearly **** themselves when they saw me bringing in my Fender Bottom with 2 15's up the stairs.
before I even put it on they were screaming at me about it.

I then laid it on the floor and played it pretty loud till they STFU

I once lent it to the PR family upstairs on the 4th floor for one of their dance parties and the plugged their stereo into it for that wonderful Latin boom boom boom :D

they were very happy when we moved out but friends of ours from the other side of the building took our apartment and had 2 small kids, removed the carpet and had to deal with the Romanian's whining at them. only difference was my friends did not make any noise other than being alive and moving in thier apartment. the Romanians made the mistake of getting in the face of my friends husband one day......he was a pissed off Irish dude who never said anything to anyone.

the Romanian's moved out

Sounds dysfunctional. Certainly something I'd be proud of.......

they didnt like noise but they didnt mind being a storage facility for off the boat relatives. loads of seedy individuals would be coming and going like a no tell motel and often under the cover of darkness. when the waves of these people would be entering the building like it was Ellis Island ironically other peoples apartments would get broken into while they were at work....

The OP may be able to move or accommodate more easily than his downstairs neighbor.
Perhaps she doesn't know him. Perhaps he needs a "bubbie". Perhaps she needs a grandson. Perhaps upon meeting him she will look forward to his practice times.
We are talking people here. Kindness begets. If it doesn't work, headphones or move.
My ex could walk loudly and I who weigh more, am trim and fit walk silently.

I could be mistaken, but from reading the OP first post you all are giving advise to a young pre-college student living at home in an apt with their parents - and they’re asking how to “prevent” the bass from brothering the 96 year old lady living downstairs - not how to tick her off and etc - so if so, you may want to keep this in mind or take into consideration before sending the OP bass missile launch command codes. ;)

And +100 to kindness.

That doesn't sound the least bit racist.

well, in all fairness being the neighbor is 96 a little respect should be given. I was just relating my experiences when I lived at home as a 15 year old who just got into playing music

Yep, the only way to shut a bully up is to bully back. We had a problem with a neighbor across the street. They accused us of everything, from not picking up after our dog to hitting their car. We did none of that. In fact, we tried to make an example of how we picked up after our dog.

One day they left a nasty note, cussing us out and threatening to call the cops, on my wife's car (notice, not mine) about us leaving our window open and our dog alone. I guess he barked while we were gone. These people have a great dane and do the same thing but nobody complains about it. Anyway, I went over, knocked on their door, and told them if they ever wanted to talk face to face about some of their complaints, I was more than willing to discuss them (in a pretty intimidating manner since I really didn't want to discuss anything.) They cowardly backed off and left us alone. Now, they give us baby clothes and offer me over for beers from time to time.
