Crazy downstairs neighbor

I could be mistaken but it sounds like you don't actually know this woman, and neither of you has made an effort to discuss this. Typical human interaction. It's easier to assume one's rightousness than empathize.

There's irony here.

If it were a 25 year-old banging on the floor, I'd probably bang her right back.

Is that ageism?

Maybe....but more likely that's assault, brotha. :hiding:

And this is why I'm looking for a house in the woods...or the country. I've been using a headphone amp for the past decade for the sake of my neighbors (both houses on either side plus the flat downstairs). At the same time, most of the people who live in the neighborhood act like they're the ONLY ones around...that's for everything from noise, to parking, etc. The people downstairs slam doors all night long and like to have loud parties all night any day of the week. Another neighbor likes to let their dog crap in our yard and on our walk. Yet another neighbor blocks the driveway, etc.

Most people have to live all over each other these days with the population density that's common here in the eastern US...and very few people know how to think about others.

Of course you should extend respect and courtesy to others, particularly when it comes to volume and particularly when you're living in an apartment or townhouse. I'd suggest never playing your bass amp at anything beyond the lowest volumes and, preferably, play only through headphones if you're in an apt or townhouse. And only play with others if you're already gone around to your neighbors and checked to see if they could handle an increase in volume for, say, two hours on a Saturday afternoon (or something - just an example).

What I object to is those people, who live in apartments or townhouses, who have the crazy expectation that they somehow live in a cone of silence and that they should never be able to hear anything happening on the other side of their walls.

Sorry, but that's unrealistic. And, sorry, whether you're 96 or 26, banging on the ceiling isn't exactly the friendliest way to start a conversation with a neighbor regarding your issues with others' noise.

If you have extra cash you don't know what to do with (haha) I quite like practicing with my Korg Pandora (PX5D). The "tube" head and speaker sim to taste (I'm liking the studio 15), and a decent pair of phones is good enough, well, with some gigs I'm running it *as* my bass rig direct into the PA. But it also has features great for practicing (transposing and phrase trainer stuff as well)...

Get the vintage combo first though. Woot. You can use any old cheesy headphone rig for practice--seriously first things first!

Things NOT to do: don't try a buttkicker or similar shaker -- it's "quiet" but it transmits bass directly into the floor. (I almost got evicted trying this trick on the top floor of an apartment building.)

But if you live in an apartment you have to respect the rights of your neighbors, which include not having to listen to you practice. Want to do whatever you like? Buy a house in the woods.

I don't agree. There should be boundaries to everything, but everyone should be able to do reasonable things during the day, for reasonable periods of time.

He should be able to make audible sounds for 1 to 2 hours a day.

Why does the right to not hear someone practice - at all - trump the right of someone to practice?

If you live in an apartment, it's a two way street.

Never invite the man into your life - the above plan will not end well for the OP... As already mentioned - bass amps and apartments don't mix, headphone amps are your friend here...

If this woman is complaining about people laughing in the flat upstairs then no amp will help, not even a headphone amp. She's a bully and I wouldn't stand for it. If she doesn't like noise then she shouldn't be living in an apartment.

You should be celebrating her not calling her crazy. You have no idea what she has lived through and done during those many years. Treat her with respect and talk to her with patience to resolve the issue.

Not to be a jerk but google "inverse ad hominem fallacy." Just because she's old doesn't mean she gets to do whatever she wants to the OP.

Most people that age are bitter because they are lonely. Think about it. Next time she bangs on her ceiling, go down there and apologize. Bring her some fresh baked cookies and offer to stay for a chat.

If you become good friends with her, maybe she won't mind as much.

Getting older is difficult, painful, and often lonely. Treat her the way you'd like to be treated when you're her age.

When given a choice between kindness and something else, choose kindness. :)

And just because people are old doesn't mean they deserve respect. That's agism. Treat her like you would a 25 year old banging on your floor.

All people are created equal and should be ***** smacked as such.

"Agism???". That's a new one. I can't even tell if it's politically correct or incorrect.....it must be just selfish.

OP, you have an 96 year old neighbour living on her own and taking care of herself. You should be celebrating her not calling her crazy. You have no idea what she has lived through and done during those many years. Treat her with respect and talk to her with patience to resolve the issue.

If you want to rehearse with a band, rent a studio as most of us do. Private practice doesn't require an amp just a simple micro mixer and a pair of headphones.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone ,regardless of race or creed, could treat each other with respect and understanding.

+ 1,000,000 to this^^

When (if) you're 96, I'll make sure and slap you around like you're 25.

Geez...men used to be this.

What the hell happened?.......somebody shoot me...

When I was a kid I would have got a clip around the ear for anything approaching the dissing of the elderly expressed here. You guys call it an attitude adjustment.

Not saying the old lady has a right to make anyone cower upstairs. I think her attitude is out of line, but be nice!

Your phrase "clip on the ear" provides a nice mental picture and really speaks there. It's our "pull on the ear" or "slap on the ear", or "upside the head" that fixes things right then and there and straightens your ass out, no need for analysation (sp?) etc.

What are you talking about? The Glambert and The Duke have a lot in common. They walk the same, they strike the same poses, they both use the same snarl and glare. Maybe doesn't say much for the Duke, but its true nonetheless...

Yeah, they are twins separated by two generations.

Actually I don't have a clue who glamourboy is but he looks like he never got a clip round the ear, and his face is all cockeyed. He probably wouldn't give up his seat on the subway to an old lady.
