Crazy reasons for breaking up the band

One of the drummers for a band I was in quit calling us for practice. When confronted about it he complained that summer was here, and because of that he wanted to play World of Warcraft all day long.

Cool.

That pretty much happened to me last year with one of my friends. We were in a jazz quartet and he started playing starcraft and later wow. Slowly it took over his life, it was like one of those movies about the dangers of drug addiction. He ended up dropping all of his music classes (4/5 of his classes) and I ended up losing a close friend.

It's sad. I've lost friends to WoW too (not band related however).

Didn't break up the band, but a guitarist who auditioned was someone I recognized from a porno I'd seen. He did not get the gig. I wouldn't have been able to play on stage with him. I'd have been laughing too much. If he had already been in the band before any of us had seen his "side project" it would have broken up the band for sure.

I think I'm more frightened by the fact that you would recognize a dude from a porno. Either you watch too much or you focus in the wrong part of the scene.

The singer in one of my bands used to be in a male exotic dance troupe. Hasn't seemed to hurt us in terms of getting gigs.

Weirdest band breakup? In college I was in a band that wanted to ditch the rhythm guitarist but he was the founder of the band. So the drummer and singer decide we should break up and then reform in a couple weeks without him. Except that in the interim we all found different projects and the singer got accepted to the semester abroad program and left for Israel.

When my college band moved up to Chicago, we picked up a sax player (one of my long time friends.) OUr band was really starting to pick up momentum until one day at practice.

We were taking a break, and our young buck singer started playing with the sax players feather thing he uses to clean his instrument. He starts lightly tapping the sax players head with it...and is asked to stop. Getting a reaction he continues, and is told to stop again. He keeps doing it, and catches a punishing right cross to the face which breaks his nose. The two of them went at it until I could put down my bass and break it up.

There was weird tension after that, and the singer ended up moving by himself to LA to "make it."

One of the indispensable players. . .

(1) develops tinnitus, stage fright, depression, or allergic reaction to second-hand smoke.

(2) is seriously hurt after a groupie encounter ends badly.

(3) realizes that the "band" is about to become a band (that is, that a casual band is threatening to become successful, and thus represent actual responsibility).

(4) joins a radical sect, and insists bandmates follow.

(5) is electrocuted on stage.

(6) is arrested.

(7) gets a 9-5 job.

(8) plays one time too many with guns, drugs, booze, fast cars, under-age girls, and/or fire.

Or,

(9) entire band is seriously screwed over by the major label contract that they had seen as the pot of gold at the rainbow's end.

I started a band once so I could date the drummer (yes, it was a she). When the band got going a little bit she didn't want to date me anymore because she didn't want us dating to interfere with the band. I didn't want to be in the band if I wasn't dating her so I broke it up!

the things we do for love . . .
Todd :)
